I didnt marry a minority yet but my father made sure I saw things from all sides and not just the ultra narrow view of my mother's side.

It is without a doubt the thing i appreciate most about him raising me.

You realize nobody here said anything even remotely close to this, right?

You gave it as an example of progress being made. This fact above is similar to a white guy claiming he isn't racist because he had a black family over for dinner one time. The above fact should be an embarrassment to this country, not an example of progress.

Meh. It's gonna always be this way. Just reading YouTube comments reminds me of that fact. You guys should have seen the comments under the Michigan Avenue flash mob news story a couple of weeks ago. There were a lot of "Those monkeys need to be eradicated" comments. Hard to believe there aren't several more with that opinion. Those thoughts just aren't out in the open anymore.

I respectfully disagree. (i'm going to copyright that opening.) I grew up with a racist grandfather in the 70's/80's. My mother wasn't racist, but her view of minorities was at best murky. I lived in mostly white suburban towns and wasn't exposed to any minorities until Jr.High, except for when I visited my family in Chicago. In Chicago gangs ruled the streets and black vs white was all that I saw. However I didn't let my grandfather's racism and my bad experiences in Chicago shape my views of minorities.

Jr.High and highschool I realized how narrow minded my grandfather was and how fear of the other race, led to hatred. Long story short, I chose to not let someone's color effect my decisions and change the way I view them. I broke the racist cycle that my grandfather had continued from his generation. Married a minority and have a beautiful little girl. I have been with my wife for almost ten years and in that ten years I can only remember two times I have experienced any racism. One in a pizza joint in Dekalb, il and the other a supermarket in Alabama. One, by a group of young black men and the other by older white ladies. Offcourse there have been looks by people sometimes and I am sure lots of people have just not said anything, but nothing that I couldn't just brush off as ignorance, like the same ignorance my grandfather possesed. He is dead and his racism died with him. "that's one small leap for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Kudos! This same story is happening everyday. Progress is a great thing.

Thanks Nas, That was my point.

Krazy Ivan - She is black. I made the early mistake of calling her African American and she said, "I'm not from Africa  "

The minority doesn't matter. I'm an equal opportunity casanova.

There is less overt racism.

But I don't think people are all that changed. I have people in my family, people I work with and people who I grew up with that use your standard slurs for every ethnicity. However, this is only done amongst other whiteys. You know, when it's safe to be racist. This is the racism you don't hear about on tv or the internet. It's the racism behind the scenes. They smile and pretend to get along with the non-whites at work or at social settings and then change their spots once they are back in their homes.

I learned a long time ago to never, ever, read Youtube comments.

There really isn't any reason to read comments posted annonymously anywhere.

My wife is Mexican and she says she notices people staring sometimes at us when out and about with our son. I havent noticed it at all but I've never really been on the lookout for it either.

Probably doesnt help living in Crown Point

I don't think anything is helped by living in Crown Point.

For whatever it's worth, youtube seems to be replacing people's usernames with their real names. It's all being done in the typical Google way, which is "you can go ahead and do it now if you want but we're eventually going to make you do it anyway."

It's a disturbing thought. I'm sure there are plenty of guys who nod politely at the door of the train and then are the same guy dropping a hard N to his buddies while playing golf or having a beer.

When the robots stage their uprising, Sun-Times commenters will be the first casualties.

EDIT: ...wait what if those commenters are the robots???

I would say yes, some of them are "in the closet racist." But, these same people would not have felt the need to hide it 15 years ago and 30 years ago would have not hired you because of your skin color, not attend church with a minority and would have hung you from a tree 50 years ago and kept you in chains 180 years ago. With the fear of the Muslims, a new racism has taken over America. You can only shake your head and ask yourself if people will ever learn and stop repeating history. If god has a plan, he might want to fire his GM and bring in Theo. Hopefully Theo won't get his "calling" until after the Cubs win the World Series.

Heavenly Times
Cubs win Cubs win!

"Cubs win world series, god to call home Theo Epstein to fix humanity!"

Theo, "This will be a total rebuilding process. Doomsday is unavoidable."

Keep it going, add your headline.....

He was released today actually.

Actually, his conviction ( a felony) on tax evasion charges, makes him ineligible to run for President.

I don't see a pardon as likely. Otherwise, he would have been released long ago, rather than having to wait until he was eligible for release. But I like the picture you used in your posting. Brings me back to fun times, even if things didn't turn out as I had hoped. But I like my slogan (Cubs end the wait in 2008) better than "It's gonna happen".
