A (good) team tried to trade for him. He had at least SOME value. It was worth trotting him out to see if he could hold it together enough to get traded for anything. Obviously that hasn't worked, so they can either eat the entire contract or pitch him every so often to see if he can figure it out again. They are doing the right thing here, IMO.

The Joel Peralta comparison might be best, given the fact that Peralta has been excellent for some time but has not been trusted with the full-time closer role for more than a short-term stint. Peralta also has double-digit rise on his fastball, which helps contrast with the sinking movement of the splitter.

I'd like to know WTF happened to the Marmol slider? Given that all his pitches are called for him, why all the fastballs? Yes they want him to throw strikes, but his slider must be gone or something because that is his outpitch.

very simple - hitters stopped swinging at it. when he was at his best a couple years ago as a setup guy he was fooling the shit out of everyone throwing that slider and guys were jumping out of their shoes trying to swing at that shit as it bounced in the dirt. eventually the league caught up with that and simply stopped swinging at it. when you all of a sudden aren't able to throw your out pitch as a strike and the hitters stop swinging at it, you're fucked.
