Nas is the greatest. Jay is in the team photo, though...

Yeah, he's moved into my top ten.

Its hard to judge when you have guys like Mobb Deep who had two albums. I love Prodigy but its not enough.

yeah i like hearing all the stories about how these songs came together and thusly into our lives. i think it was on that DVD where jay talked about he started writing songs on the back of grocery bags when he'd take the subway out for the day. he'd start off with like 2-4 lines and then the next day it was 4-6 lines, and then the next day 6-8 lines, etc etc.

and of course, the legend of ain't no [n-word] is that jay had a verse together for the cut, came to the studio, and foxy was there with her verse which as we know is !! so jay was like oh hell naw fuck this and purportedly went into a corner for 30 mins without pen/paper and just zoned out into his lil autistic paradise and was like "ok i got this" and laid the verse there in front of foxy/memphis/whoever.

that's the part of the whole rapping thing that's a pain for me.... the actual work. writing/memorizing songs and what have you.... evidently that's not even a thought to someone like jay.

btw, i endorse the use of the humpty hump beat for the second half here.

Yeah, always thought that was cool.

Someone like Lil Wayne tries brag about not writing his lyrics down, but would probably greatly benefit from either writing or better yet someone else who is not lil wayne write something for him. It's only a badge of honor if you're good at it.

Eminem on the other hand writer everything down. Has a shitload of notebooks and shoe boxes full of stuff. Probably the second greatest rapper of all time...

I mean, everything I've heard of his is just talking about how successful his investments have been. No one would even listen to a Bob Dylan song where he talks about how successful his investments have been, let alone call him great for it.

Two completely different generes.

Bragging about money, success, skils, women etc. is an age old hiphop tradition...

But it's all he does. Everyone else in the pantheon has been able to express some depth. Jay-Z is just I MARRIED BEYONCE! I RUN A VANITY LABEL! I BOUGHT TWO THIRDS OF ONE PERCENT OF A BASKETBALL TEAM! Congruatulations?
