The incorrect scorecard means you are disqualified is one of the dumbest rules in sports. I understand an extra penalty but in any event they have official scorekeepers they should be the ones who make the decisions.

Now, bring on all the "golf is a game of tradition and honor" posts.

:lol Except for know the rules...

Rules are rules, Rick. Every sports has ones that people think are "dumb." But if they are written in the rule book, it is up to the professionals to know them, understand the, and follow them.

I'm not sure why a rules official didn't step in and say something, but whats done is done.

It's still one of the dumbest rules in sports if not the dumbest. It needs to be changed.

If Tiger violated the rule, he should be punished as the rulebook states, but it's still a rule that needs to be changed.

Its not the dumbest. The homefield in the World Series rule is the dumbest for sure.

Golf is a silly game. Fun, but silly, stupid, frustrating game. The ball is in the water and you're already down a stroke. I don't think it should matter how far back you drop, but again rules are rules. I guess he should have hit from the drop zone

If it was anyone else, they'd be disqualified.

But the CBS bosses want Tiger for the weekend.

CHOMP.

Tiger Woods may very well be disqualified from a tournament because a rules official made a wrong call and didn't enforce it until it was too late. That's much worse than an extra home game when they otherwise alternated.

He is not going to be DQ'd. He was assessed a 2 stroke penalty and thats it.

Tiger is still in it! 2 stroke penalty. I guess a rule change in 2012 allows for this. CBS bosses are happy.

I bet they got the idea from the ABC bosses.

Filthy tv executives.

The scorecard rule was changed a year or two ago after Harrington was DQ'd when tv viewers called in saying his ball had moved... After the card was signed.

I don't know the exact rule, but it is something about the player signing a card that they couldn't know was wrong at the time. Again, not sure of the exact wording.

Seems like a dubious application of the new rule, which was put in place for situations where the player "could not know" that a violation had occurred. Tiger admitted that he intentionally dropped the ball farther back so he could take the same swing and have the ball end up two yards short of the previous shot, and that the result ended up "perfect."

Personally, I like Tiger, so I'm happy with the ruling. I do understand your idea that they might have stretched the rule in this case.

Tiger or not, I like the new version of the rule. The player is penalized for the mistake made on the course and allowed to continue to play. Seems like the best overall solution.

Masters gave Tiger a pass because they originally ruled his drop was fine and thus he shouldn't be responsible for signing wrong scorecard.

Seems logical.

Agreed (I didn't realize the official had given his blessing at the time).

Golf Channel talking like Tiger's legacy is forever tarnished by this blatant cheating and that he has disgraced himself and the game. Apparently, this is the equivalent of taking steroids in baseball.

Seriously?

It's not even the first time this year he was assessed a penalty.

Dumb people on the Golf Channel.

Three-time Masters champion Nick Faldo said on the Golf Channel: "Tiger should really sit down and think about this and what it will leave on his legacy. Personally, I think this is dreadful. ... That was no intention to drop close to the divot.''

Watch Golf Channel right now, Nick Faldo and Brandel Chamblee are both 100 percent certain Tiger should DQ himself.

Well you can make a case saying he should DQ himself, that's not too far out there.

Sure, but saying it tarnishes his legacy is a bit much.

Especially from a deutschebank like Faldo.

This might be a stupid question. Tiger knew playing further back would DQ him, right? Why did he do it? Furthermore, why did he admit it in the post game interview knowing he could be DQed?

So he gets lucky and it's only 2 strokes but all pro golfers know the rules right?

My guess is no, he didn't understand the rule. Idk if he thought 2 yards was "close enough" or if he thought he go back as far as wanted keeping the first spot between him and the flag???

No way any player is going to risk DQ over 2 yards if they completely understand the rule.

Ok. Then I guess I'm shocked that a pro golfer doesn't know the rules. That's pretty amazing to me.

Since Tiger never knew this rule, I'll bet there are other incidents where he had illegal drops. Perhaps in some of his major wins. You know people are gonna go back and review the videos.

Maybe other golfers have done so as well, but I have to believe that 99% of pro golfers know this rule. Not Tiger. Once again, that's the most amazing thing to me.

And it's clear he wasn't trying to cheat as he admitted it in his interview. His admission is the only reason they penalized him. They thought it was clean initially.
