Ok so what really is the purpose of certified mail.
I mean, so you have a signature proving that the recipient signed for something. But what? Could it have been important documents? And empty envelope?
So what do you really prove if you send certified mail? Nothing. not a damn thing. Say you have a dispute with I dunno, a concrete company or a complany that installs tankless water heaters. And you send them, certified, and empty envelope. Later, if the dispute went to some type of litigation, you could say just about anything was in there. A dispute letter? Response to a dunn letter?
It proves absolutely nothing.

I demand that someone close the certified mail loophole, and save consumers millions of wasted dollars buying something that really means jack shit.

Certified mail is much easier to track than First Class mail. Certified mail has a tracking number, much like UPS/FedEx. So, if it were to get "lost", you could use the tracking number to see where in the postal system the mail is in. As someone who works w/ this type of mail on a daily basis, it's a better way to send something important. You wouldn't want to send a company a $100k check in first class.

Actually, if I were to send something of substantial value, I probably would just use a courier service.

I think the only people who use the service any more or at all are lawyers.

When you deal with dirtballs, almost always 'I didnt get that" is the response.

Yes, I know they can say they still didnt get it if the wife, kids, etc signs for something, but thats not the senders issue, if for example, I want to evict you, I need to give you 30 days notice before such proceedings begin, as long as I have evidence that I served the notice, you have 30 days to figure out your shit, regardless if you got my notice or not.

yeah, it's also used to prove notification for zoning/variance requests, to adjacent neighbors. the receipts typically have to be provided to the zoning board of appeals.

I requested a zoning change, had to send out my letters. The one lady who lived behind the site and I knew would be a problem, claimed she didnt get the letter until 2 days prior to the meeting. Even though it was delivered to her 17 days prior to the meetings. She came to the meeting ready to fight that she didnt get this letter in time.

Luckily I have the date the letter was sent and first attempt to deliver was made.

She stands up and says she was at work and didnt get the letter.

I then ask her where she works (I knew where she worked)

She then answers in front of the neighborhood meeting 'I work for the post office"

The grumbling starts, people start laughing at her, even the Alderman laughed, she gets mad, starts crying and screams "HE IS GOING TO RUIN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD"

She was dismissed and I got the Zoning change.

Presence at the meeting immediately discredits the argument of a lack of notice.

Municipalities are moving away from requiring certified mailings for public hearings.

I think certified mailing is a good way to tell the other party that things are getting serious....which makes it great for valentine's day.
