Pretty good. Maybe Papelbon was better. Im a little biased, but I dont know why you would scoff at my statement. If he wasnt the best, he was the second best and he was absolutely the thing that turned around that team.

I think he was the most valuable on the 07 team. He came up on May 19th and a week later they went on their run.

08 he was just a good closer.

Most Cub fans seemed to want him to close. Dont remember a lot of concern for the future.

I think Lou is the biggest factor in Marmol's decline over the past couple seasons. He had to go to him way too much, and I think that's killed his dominating stuff he used to have. Every time Lou brought him in from the pen just made me cringe. But I guess you've got to stick with what works.

There are also intangibles involved here. Knowing that if you have a lead in the 5th or 6th you are getting two innings of dominant pitching is a good thing for a team.

As soon as Marmol came up and started dominating as a setup man they went on their run. I dont think its a coincidence.

Anyway, Im saying I dont remember a lot of worry about Marmol. I do remember people wanting him to close, when he was just a set up man.

Look, I said it already but Ill reiterate that I am biased. I loved Marmol right away and I loved watching Cub games knowing he would come in and shut em down for 2 innings at that point.

He was dominant in those two years, especially 07. IMU is right though, Papelbon was just as good.

Just admit you made a bad baseball thought and move on. Citing any variation of ERA for closers is just compounding the problem.

He was top 2 or 3 for sure. I dont think overrating him by that small of a margin should be described as a "bad baseball thought" but if you do, ok.

I'm just getting back to this thread. I had little cartoon hearts over my head the first time I saw Marmol pitch. He was filthy. He was filthy for a long time. People caught up to him.

I saw the Soriano contract brought up. I remember calling my friend to let him know about the deal. I said the last two years would be horrible money, but I was jacked they went out and signed possibly the number one guy out there. When I found out Hendry negotiated against himself, etc., it was a little different.

In 07 Marmol let 12% of inherited runners score. That's pretty good. Seems like every time he came in they were in a jam.

He was definitely a top 3 guy in 07. Saves sometimes get a little more credit. Papelbon was just as good but in the NL, it was Marmol.

Motte is hurt now, but we'll see how his story plays out. Motte throws 100, so he probably won't have the same issues with people laying off his slider... not to say that all relievers, aren't highly cumbustible and fungible from year-to-year.

That isn't the best use of resources, Jackson is a fairly durable innings-eater type at a market contract. They'll trade for someone or develop a closer. I can't see Jackson being used out of the bullpen unless he has injury issues
