Maybe not. I dont think the jokes would matter to me at all if that happened.

And a certain part of me thinks If I say this joke to a guy in my office, nobody gets hurt.

I know that's a bit flawed. Just being honest here.

I could be wrong, but I tend to find that people who have lived through some serious shit tend to not use jokes as a tension breaker. That's just my personal experience and opinion. Criticize as you see fit.

I'm not trying to over-aggrandize my own situation, but I would say in my own life I find the opposite to be true.

Like anything in life, our own perception of it is skewed to our own egos/bullshit/triggers/ situations. I find humor to have saved me from teetering over the edge on many occasions.

I made some very tasteless posts yesterday. I really don't care what anybody else thought about them. Rather than wallow in pity and think how scary it could be if something happened outside my office, I chose to laugh about it.
