WASHINGTON -- A U.S. senator who was the intended recipient of a letter apparently laced with ricin said he had hired the suspected sender, an Elvis impersonator, to play at a wedding a decade ago.

Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), a quiet two-term senator who was trailed by security in the Capitol on Thursday, said he had hired Paul Kevin Curtis and "he was quite entertaining."

"I have indeed met the gentleman in question," Wicker told reporters.

"My impression is that since that time he's had mental issues. He's not as stable as he was back then."

Wicker said he and his wife "kicked in our share" to partially cover the entertainment costs for the newlyweds.

The senator declined to discuss earlier reports that the suspect, who also sent a letter with ricin to President Obama, had corresponded frequently. But he added "I wouldn't say they're inaccurate."

The suspect was arrested late Wednesday in Corinth.

"I should probably ought to just keep my trap shut," Wicker said.

Unquestionably.

Because Elvis impersonators are usually the picture of stability.

I enjoy a good impersonator. Just guys trying to make a living. The good ones probably make decent change.

APNewsBreak: Suspect in ricin letters case has been released from jail, marshals service says

By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, April 23, 12:12 PM

OXFORD, Miss. — A federal official says the man charged with sending poison letters to President Barack Obama, a U.S. senator and a Mississippi judge has been released from jail.

Jeff Woodfin, chief deputy with the U.S. Marshals Service in Oxford, Miss., says Paul Kevin Curtis has been released from custody.

Woodfin says he doesn’t know if there were any conditions on the release.

The development comes hours after officials canceled a detention and preliminary hearing on Tuesday.

Curtis was arrested Wednesday at his house in Corinth, Miss., and charged with sending ricin-laced letters to Obama, Sen. Roger Wicker and a Lee County, Miss., judge.

Through an attorney, the 45-year-old Curtis has said he is innocent.
