An update from Lake County Stormwater Management Commission:

We are reminded what “floodplain” really means and why we should leave them alone. Lake County rainfall ranged from about 2.7” to almost 5” over night (7:00 am to 7:00 am). With an overall average of 3.9”. The rainfall was bad enough but the rivers were already high due to previous rain events and snow melt from Wisconsin. The result is likely to be significant flooding.

The heavy rain (and likely severe weather) have pretty much moved east of us although it is possible to get rain showers on and off through tonight. Anything from here on out shouldn’t be too bad though (assuming we don’t get convective storms popping up this afternoon).

Surprisingly enough, the rainfall rates were not as high as I would have expected in terms of “year event”. The “year event” ranged from a 2.6 year storm event in Zion to a 14 year event in Wauconda. When you stop to think about it though, even at Zion one wouldn’t expect to see those rates but once in three years (on the average) and this seems about right.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a crest on the Fox River at New Munster at 15-feet which is a foot above major flood stage. The record flood at New Munster is 15.18 feet in 2008.

The National Weather Service forecast crests on the Des Plaines River are:

Russell is 10.5-feet which is 0.5 feet above major flood level.
Gurnee is 11.5-feet which is 0.5 feet above major flood level.
Lincolnshire it is hard to say because the forecast exceeds the calibrated stage of 14-feet but it is anticipated to be at a major flood stage as well.

To put things into perspective, a stage of 11.5-feet at Gurnee is about a 10-year flood event in the FIS (Flood Insurance Study). The “100-year” flood event is about 4-feet higher!

All the storm tracks are moving north. RockVegas is gonna get slammed but most of us won't see jack out of that one if they stay on course.

POtential for the big storms today and tomorrow. South winds are pulling warm, moist air up to our region from the Gulf of Mexico, meanwhile the jetstream is pushing a cold front along, which is tapping into cooler air from up in Canada. The front will be moving across our area today and tomorrow. Tornadoes and large hail is more likely down state and west into Iowa, but its a pretty unstable atmosphere so its very possible that a Tornado spawning supercell could pop up in our area over the next 36 hours. The main threats to us will be lightning and straightline winds in excess of 60mph.
