I think the idea is look how good the Expos could have been if they had any money and didn't have to trade away the farm. Ergo: WCUB are doing it right by bringing along talent they can pay later using these new revenue streams AND go after an occasional free agent.

bonus points for ergo use?

I'll apparently have to review the show thread to hear what was said; my feed keeps shitting the bed and I got tired of Steve Dahl radio with minute-long periods of silence.

Somewhat telling that we aren't comparing the Cubs to the Dodgers or Yankees or Red Sox or any other big market teams.

We are comparing them will rinky-dink franchises that don't have any money and are forced to do the most economical form of franchise-building which is spending money on cheap talent.

I'm not even being critical but let's see it for what it is. The Cubs don't have any money or won't spend it and so they are trying to make the Cubs a small-market team in a large-market. It's Wrigley Family Cubdom. Hope it works.

I just tune in and hear CTE talk, awesome. Apparently, college football is going away sometime soon to be replaced by a minor league system due to liability issues. Well, it was a good 5 minutes of listening.

beni listened so...never mind. Check out the John Kass article Q-bo started. That is what started the death of football talk.

Generally speaking I am a bigfan of this STREAM STRONG during the Sox day games. That was much better than what we are usually fed. Glad a few sponsors kicked in to keep me entertained for a few more hours. Can't say I am buying any product, but still nice of them.

A gut feeling...Terry & Dan B. sign on around 5P this afternoon for only an hour of live sports talk on 670 The SCORE before Laurence Holmes, Matt Bowen & Hub Arkush host the second of the "Bud Light Inside the War Room" NFL/Bears Draft Specials at 6P.

I guess where my brain is having trouble with local talk on the stream and Sox games over the air is the idea of the over-the-air broadcast being the "medium of record," if that makes any sense. The Score, despite the internet, is still a radio station first and foremost, broadcasting at 670 kilohertz at 50,000 watts. The stream, then, is a simulcast of that transmission. The Score also pays the White Sox to carry their games (and it should be noted that fewer and fewer stations pay rights fees for sports; they prefer to broker the time up front and let the team sell the ads), but MLB does not allow stations to stream games. Okay.

So if you are continuing with regularly scheduled programming on the stream while interrupting your airwaves to present play-by-play of a crappy baseball team, then what's the medium of record here? You could say it's not fair to stream listeners that they have to get kicked over to alternative programming. I submit that it's not fair to people in their cars or garages or elsewhere that have to have Mac interrupted by a Sox game. How can the White Sox be the centerpiece of your programming if you can opt out of their games and listen to the Score as if they hadn't bought the rights in the first place? It would be like if Fox made a big deal about its Sunday NFL games, and then said "now, if the game in your part of the country sucks harder than a desperate whore, flip over to digital subchannel 2 for our regularly scheduled programming of When Drug Dogs Hump Cops."

There's also the tree-falling-in-a-forest aspect of doing a show for an internet audience only. Will listeners be expected to know or care what happened on the stream show?

Here is my programming suggestion to the Score: a show of classic Score moments from the last 20+ years. Promote an engineer to host the show and compile the work. I would probably listen to that more often than regular broadcasting.

The problem with that is that the Score tends to throw its former personalities overboard, as led by Captain Boerbeard and First Mate Shake That. How can you present classic moments when everyone involved who wasn't Dan Bernstein was just a real piece of crap?

The tree falling piece is interesting if you look at a radio show like a sit com. I don't see it as that. Some goofs talking about topics. Usually there is no carry over. If you use Mac's thoughts on the subject your audience changes every what 20 minutes, so we can probably be treated to the same stuff, or something similar as we just heard. Less Who's your guy.

I thought it was slightly interesting that I had used the term "debt service" earlier today in the Mac thread talking about the Cubs.

I don't know the answer to this but is that a term that non-financial people use often to discuss loan payments? I figured they would just say loan payments.

I don't hear it being discussed by the common man when talking about his mortgage. I don't really even hear it much from business owners talking about their obligations. I may hear it with more sophisticated investment types.

It is a jargon type of term because it really doesn't accurately describe the action. "Servicing my debt" is a closer description but "my debt service" sounds like someone who pays your bills for you.

It's usually just short for Debt Service Coverage Ratio which is a typical debt covenant for a loan from a financial institution.

I gotta admit. I'm an uninterested party, but I can't figure what Ricketts is trying to accomplish. Running the team into the ground for 5 years to get high draft picks that might amount to something in 5-10 years. Is this really the plan?

Pretty much, but it's less effective with a draft system that better allows teams to cost-control their players. I used to think Red Sox fans were annoying in heralding all their prospects as "the best." I figured they were just being bloviating New Englanders. No, actually their prospects were the best, because they got all the guys who demanded too much money from the Royals and Pirates and just re-entered the draft until their demands were met by the Red Sox.

That said, not all their prospects turned out. Remember how Lars Anderson and Jed Lowrie were going to change the way we thought about baseball?

This is a great idea.

Does anyone know how the rights work to the old shows? Do North, Jiggs, etc. have to sign off on an arrangement like this to allow the Score to broadcast the old Monsters shows? I'd guess not since I can remember Mac, when he was on 1000, playing those old Mike Murphy shows where he talked about the old Cubs soaping up in the shower.
