But why do you think you have those preferences? Because the products you like just happen to be the best and you are a man of exquisite tastes?

Isn't it possible to have a favorite something without having seen an advertisment for it?
Right now I'm drinking a Revolution Anti-Hero.
I bought it because I dig it, tasted it at a bar at the first Bulls outing.
Never once seen an ad.
I buy it because I dig it.

Sure, it's possible, but advertising has become so ubiquitous we often don't even recognize it as advertising. You had to choose the Anti-Hero for some reason- maybe the tapper looked cool, maybe a bartender pitched it, I don't know, but something caused you to find out about it. I guess if Doug recommended it, maybe we won't call that advertising, but a referral from a friend.

It's funny that so many people are so immune to advertising but the Cubs are desperate for a giant video board to flash ads in front of people constantly.

I asked the tarbender what IPA's they had. he listed four, two I had (one of which I thought was dogshit) and two I hadn't. I just picked one.

Okay. I think you can buy stuff without advertising, but it definitely has far more effect on people than most want to admit. Nobody likes to think they're being manipulated.

See, you've chosen a somewhat bulletproof position.
For example, it's clear that each of us needs to eat.
We cannot eat without consuming a product that has been advertised, or purchasing from a location that has been advertised.

CSFMB: I only eat generic rice
JORR: yeah but you bought it at jewels, you shopped at jewels because you were manipulated by advertising!

Is it possible to purchase something like a brand of asswipe that has not been advertised at a location that has not been advertised? That purchase is not evidence of manipulation by deception of advertising. It's a fact that we need to use asswipe.

Well, it's only bulletproof because it's true. If you want to leave food out of it we can. But I would like to point out that a lot of people are quick to tell a LINK recipient what foods he "needs". There are all kinds of shit we all have and believe we "need". Why do we buy it?

And there's the obligatory "I'm so much better/more evolved that you" someguy post where he implies that he's above the debate and is annoyed by it!

THANK GOD!
I was wondering what took so long.

Usually he's better than us within 2-3 pages tops.

I have tried enough products to have formed opinions on which I like best. Quite frankly at this stage in life I don't try a lot of new products. I know what I like and I stick with those things. If it's a steak, it's a 18-20 oz bone-in Ribeye(from prime and tender meats n Hinsdale-they do not advertize). If it's a lobster, it's cold-water from New Zealand or Australia(from supreme lobster they don't advertize). If it's a cigar, it's a Cohiba (Habana if possible)I have a friend in the transportation business that has his drivers get them when they go to Canada or mexico. If it's a hot dog, it's from Portillos. If I get a pie, it's blueberry, Key lime or Banana creme from Bakers square (do they even advertize anymore?). I know what I like by now, so it's not difficult.

Oh, ok. let's leave food out of it. That's what? 20% of an average income?
I suppose we should leave other necessities out of it too, like shelter.
So now 50% or greater of our spending isn't included in your hypothesis that the majority of what we do every day is driven by advertisment.

Ok. So tell me, if I buy a steak at my butchers vs. buying rice and beans at an unadvertised market, which advertisement have I fallen for?

I think you're way off base. Advertisements sometimes make you aware products exist, and sometimes, they might convince you to buy it. I would never deny that. Shit there's an advertisement out today for the new XBOX that's got me quite curious indeed. But that certainly isn't part of my daily activities being driven by advertising.

that's silly to postulate. Most of us just get up, get dressed, go to work and go home and eat dinner and (hopefully) get laid by our loved ones or in Steve's case his horse. We're not doing these things because we're manipulated. We're doing them because we need to eat, have shelter, and asswipe.

None of my day involves activities driven by advertising. With 99% of the products I use, I buy the cheapest possible brand, and with the short list of items in which I may have a favorite brand, it is one I have used for years. I am a very non-observant person (externally). I pay no attention to billboards, I turn the radio during advertisements, and I DVR anything I watch on TV. The only advertising I may even be subjected to is "word of mouth" and internet ads, which I ignore. In regards to word of mouth, I don't hold the opinions of anyone who talks to me about products in high regard, so the advertising doesn't work. I just don't give a fuck.

My coffee is 8 o'clock coffee. I don't know that i've ever seen an ad for it.
I drive to work in my company truck, or I'll head out in my Tacoma if personal business.
My lunch is genreally made of Aldi wheat bread and Aldi lunchmeat. Some Diet Coke. I buy diet coke because it's the best tasting diet except maybe Diet Mountain Dew but DW doesn't like diet Mt. Dew.
When I go home I turn on my UVerse. It's uverse because it's what's available in my neighborhood.
Dinner is usually Aldi chicken or beefs. Sometimes I go to the butchers in mchenry and buy steaks or ribs. It's a family owned shop.
Bed.

Pretty sure not much of my day is driven by advertising.

So you eat crappy food from Aldi and have to drink diet Coke because you wife doesn't want to but diet Mt. Dew, because it's not what she likes and doesn't care to get something for you she wouldn't want to drink. Wow....lame.

mine is more word of mouth or suggestions by people that have used it before. Take the body shop that the family truckster is at right now. I drove over a hour into the city to go to this one because, 1. the guy works on car's worth more then some houses and does a honest job and won't dick you around because you have a mini van in there. 2. My folks have been going to the guy for over 30 years.

A couple things here.
Aldi food isn't crappy. Ground beef is ground beef no matter where you get it. Lunchmeat is lunchmeat no matter where you get it. Wheat bread, chicken breast, it doesn't matter whether u buy it at aldi or you overspend at dominicks. Jorr should thank you for proving his point that the stupid fall for advertising, thinking that dominicks bread is somehow superior to aldi. Dumbass.

And I like diet coke. I get it because we both like it. Sometimes if I'm at a gas station I'll buy a diet mountain dew. You ever get something your wife likes or do you just do whatever you want? Shocking that one of us has been divorced and one of us has a long lasting happy marrage. Hmmm.
You're still a fucking putz.

There is nothing wrong with buying something from a lower priced store or a off brand. Tora likes a few of the breakfast type bars for snacks at school. She prefers the walmart brand over nutragrain and nature valley. Do i care? Uuumm heck no. Just because something is "name brand" or a "higher priced brand" doesn't always make it a better product. Plus too when something is basically the same thing but just wrapped in a different box and a dollar or two less I am going with the lesser priced non advertised item

Sometimes we do. I usually am perfectly fine with the diet coke. I said diet coke is the best except maybe diet mt. Dew. I'll get coke zero, or diet crush, or diet 7up or diet dew when I buy a 20ozer if I'm out and about. Depends on what I feel like. Generally, I just buy a case of soda when shoppint and since we both like it I buy diet coke usually.
