Went for a jog past Wrigley and noticed a couple things. The Billy Williams statue has a plaque that refers to him as "soft spoken". Now, that well may be the case, but it comes off as offensive to me. "Soft spoken" is how the white bossman refers to a good negro what ain't uppity. They should think about changing that.

Also, they now have their scalper's ticket booth that looks exactly like a regular stadium ticket booth on stadium property. It's unconscionable.

I think you may be reading too much into the soft-spoken thing.

I've been called soft-spoken a lot.

Have you been to the big house to see Sam Jackson?

I don't think they meant anything by it, but believe me, if I read it that way, I'm sure other people have as well.

Soft spoken is generally not a compliment in any career except for undertakers and people who do the dirty work in the background and let someone else take the credit. I have to agree here --why did they even put that on there?

Did you see Ernie's statue? That one refers to him as "one of the good ones".

They should've put "He wasn't an asshole" on there instead.

Clearly the lesson here is nothing ever good happens while on a jog.

I think engraving "Not Lando Calrissian" on there is a little condescending to baseball fans as well.

Hasn't Baines always been celebrated for being soft-spoken? Seems like a lot of ballplayers are, though especially black ones, thinking about it.

Not just black players.

Ryne Sandberg.

The Cubs organization can't be considered racist when for the last 30 years or so the only two numbers that were retired were Banks & Williams. I thought that was cheapened when they retired Santo & Sandberg's numbers. The only other Cubs that should have had their numbers retired:

Jenkins'
Maddux
Caveretta
Hack Wilson
Gabby Hartnett

Then Santo,Sandburg.

I've never thought of the Cubs organization as racist. It's always been more of a benign whiteness.

I don't think back then they had numbers.

Teams still retire the players' names and put a team insignia in lieu of a number. The Cardinals, for instance, have ensured that no one who plays for their great organization shall ever again have the name "Rogers Hornsby."
