As soon as this dude announces that he is gay Bernstein proclaims him to be a good guy off the bench. The guy is hanging on by a thread, wouldn't shock me if he's played his last NBA game.

Kudos to Laurence for prefacing the Jason Collins segment on his show by saying things like "I don't believe in shouting people down. I want to have a discussion." and "I'm interested in all opinions, even if I don't agree with them, so long as we can have a discussion and not an argument."

He went WAAAY out of his way to essentially say that what happened between 1-6 will not happen on his show.

Good for him. Bernstein was a disgrace today and essentially acted exactly like Hawk Harrelson.

I'm impressed with Bernstein's self-awareness. At least he recongnizes he's a racist.

I listened to a lot of the show today and I'm usually a little suspicious when Dan goes over the top like he did today. Does he truly have the beliefs that he spoke about on air? Is he a bigot that's trying very hard to convince himself and others that he isn't?

Well, by his definition of what he considers a bigoted person he clearly displays those parameters with a few groups...

I listened to a few minutes late including that religious caller JORR referenced and Danny just was beside himself.

Get a grip asshole.

Just bad radio. I know they have their listeners and fans, but to me it's just bad radio. Sometimes it's funny, but mostly it's just a ripfest.

It got old years ago.

Lol...Laurence always shouts people down on his show and pretty much becomes Mini-Dan when filling in on their show, so no, that is not true.

I personally don't rely on a book to tell me how to treat people and I get suspicious of people who bring up old and new testament, I was told by a pastor once that "the bible doesn't change with the times" but yet, there is a old and new testament, which is it because it sounds like change to me, just change that benefits the beliefs of the church? Did Dan go overboard on the guy, sure, do I think the guy is letting a loosely worded book that can be interpreted many ways influence how he feels, yep.

Gay or straight, doesn't matter to me either way, none of my business.

It was sad to see DB employ the same kind of black or white moral judgmentalism he professes to hate. For a man so apparently critical of religion, he also seems to speak quite authoritatively on which believers are real or heretics.

I suspect the only reason he came out now is because his career is basically over and feels as though coming out could pressure teams into signing him.

I don't know the guy's motivations, but it sure isn't the same thing as if Chris Paul or Derrick Rose had come out. Anyway, I asked this before and I don't think anyone answered, wasn't that center from Penn State, John Amaechi, who played in the NBA a little bit an open homosexual?

Also, isn't the whole "Collins is the first active player..." angle kind of arbitrary? John Amaechi declared he was gay after he retired, but he admitted he was gay while he was a NBA player.

Seriously, I think the New Covenant says that stuff about "do unto others" or simply "love one another". I think gays are covered in there.

I myself am not religious, but it irkes me. I don't know why.
I guess intolerance is intolerance no matter who the subject is.

Also, Dan is completely oblivious, in my opinion, to life outside his cute little upper middle class whitebread existence. The "JUST MOVE" litany is a case in point. Lots of people can't "just move". Lots of people can't "just get a better job". Education is fucking expensive and in my opinion the rules are such that minorities have the deck stacked against them quite a bit. And I don't believe Dan understands that.

God yes. He's also always talking about how people should just "invest wiser" when they don't have money. Really, Dan? What fucking planet are you on? The majority are living hand to fucking mouth, and that's a fact. Any time money comes up in any way, Dan is utterly insufferable.

I've just been listening to that last hour. I think what the Christians mean when they call it a "lifestyle" is that whatever desires a gay person has, he or she should not act upon them. For them, bernstein shouting "THAT'S THE WAY THEY ARE!" over and over again doesn't change anything. Child molesters may be born that way. That isn't carte blanche to do whatever they want. Christians see both things as sinful. And I understand it isn't an exact correlation. In exactly the same way Jackie Robinson isn't.

I think by "investing wiser" he means people should play the scratch offs that pay off lower but have better odds rather than going for the long term, infinitesimal odds offered by Powerball tickets.

And I hate to be the guy that keeps bringing up Reddit, but God forbid if Dan ever discovers /r/atheism. From the messages people have been leaving here today he sounds like a distillation of every tortured 16 year old that populates that place.

Terry doesn't believe much of what he says, including his agreement with Berns today. He has just succumbed to Berns & doesn't want to go toe to toe with him.

As for today's show, I was on the road traveling & got in the car & turned on the radio mid afternoon to hear Berns flipping out on people & almost breaking down & crying at one point. The Berns act of being holier than thou & being above everyone is really old...& sad. If I was Mitch, I would have jumped out of my chair & ran down the hall to the studio to give B&B the cut throat signal.

Being gay in this day & age really isn't a big deal, is it?

Berns bringing up the babysitter is akin to someone saying, "oh, I have gay friends". He didn't appear very genuine to me today. It's like he's trying to win some broadcasting award and changing his show's format to do so.

Dunno if this was linked up up thread or elsewhere, but Jason Collins first-person SI story is an inspiring read, regardless of one's sexual orientation or religious beliefs.

Quote:
Loyalty to my team is the real reason I didn't come out sooner. When I signed a free-agent contract with Boston last July, I decided to commit myself to the Celtics and not let my personal life become a distraction. When I was traded to the Wizards, the political significance of coming out sunk in. I was ready to open up to the press, but I had to wait until the season was over.

A college classmate tried to persuade me to come out then and there. But I couldn't yet. My one small gesture of solidarity was to wear jersey number 98 with the Celtics and then the Wizards. The number has great significance to the gay community. One of the most notorious antigay hate crimes occurred in 1998. Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student, was kidnapped, tortured and lashed to a prairie fence. He died five days after he was finally found. That same year the Trevor Project was founded. This amazing organization provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention to kids struggling with their sexual identity. Trust me, I know that struggle. I've struggled with some insane logic. When I put on my jersey I was making a statement to myself, my family and my friends.
