Amazing that if you have the guts to say that based on your religious beliefs you disagree with homosexuality you become some sort of pariah. I guess that whole tolerance thing is good for the goose but not so much for the gander. ESPN was wrong for calling him out. He's raised a legitimate issue for many people in and out of professional sports that now serves as the 800 lb. elephant in the room.

Quote:
In a segment on Monday about NBA player Jason Collins’ coming out, EPSN analyst Chris Broussard said that as a Christian he does not “agree with homosexuality” and implied that by coming out as gay, Collins is “walking in open rebellion to God and Jesus Christ.”
Broussard has come under fire for that comment, made on the network’s one-hour special episode of Outside the Lines, which focused on Collins’ essay in Sports Illustrated where he announced he is gay, becoming the first openly gay male major American professional sports player.
Broussard said on the segment that “true tolerance and acceptance is being able to… not criticize each other and call each other names,” before launching into his personal beliefs about homosexuality.

“If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says ‘you know them by their fruits,’ it says that that’s a sin,” said Broussard. “And if you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality — adultery, fornication, pre-marital sex between heterosexuals — whatever it may be, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and Jesus Christ, so I would not characterize that person as a Christian.”

He has his beliefs and he articulated them in a way that encourages discussion and minimizes hostility. I don't personally agree with him, but wasn't angry watching him speak yesterday.

I think a lot of the critics of Broussard would say he's being a hypocrite by picking and choosing which sin constitutes walking in open rebellion of God.

And he's not a homophobe.

He isn't afraid of gay people.

He doesn't believe in how they live their life.

I disagree but like NSD said, he isn't being belligerent. He's stating his opinion.

I agree. I'm a believer and I also sin. My sin is no less sinful than that of a gay person. I have no room to judge anyone.

The KKK defended white supremacy through their interpretation of Christian ideology.

I guess we better forgive and forget with them, too, huh?

But unless he's making statements when players are caught cheating or living with their girlfriends, he should probably keep this to himself. Christians aren't supposed to pick and choose which sins they think are great or small. Some do....but they aren't supposed to.

Also, Christians are supposed to leave it up to Christ on who is and is not a Christian. But....again......that doesn't seem to happen so much these days...

Yeah, Ill agree with that Ivan. But he's not choosing sins. At least on the surface he's listing other ones. But he should go after every guy who cheats on his wife etc

My biggest struggle with the Church. We've allowd hatred and judging to be disguised as love, somehow...

How so? Religion has historically been used to defend a lot of awful things. Hiding under the umbrella of religious freedom doesn't mean one's bigotry should be "tolerated."

The majority of people are only religious when it is convenient for them.

Again. Big leap. He's not acting with hatred or even persecuting Jason...at least in the context of the ESPN clip. He was asked a question and responded that he didn't agree to it for his various religious high horse reasons. Saying that what he did is somehow a microcosm or correlates to the KKK is a sensationalist leap.

Saying someone is not a Christian could be highly offensive (I don't know if the BB guy considers himself a Christian or not).

I think it's a bit more complex than that. The KKK doesn't hide under umbrella of religious freedom. Like the Crusades, they talk shit to justify their means, but they are both torturers and murderers. Broussard is just stating his opinion and for all we know, he's a hypocrite, but giving him the benefit of the doubt, he has the right to express his opinion.

As a journalist he should have made it less personal and simply said that Collins may have some issues with those who believe homosexuality conflicts with their religious beliefs.
