Did you catch the drive-by in Dan's column praising the NHL for You Can Play?

Sounds simple and obvious, but hockey has never been the most progressive of sports.

I don't know if I'd necessarily call it progressive, but hockey is definitely the most secular of sports. Drawing primarily from Canada, Minnesota, and New England, you're not dealing with the Bible belt here. People are more private about their faith. You don't see much of the black church, nor the evangelical FCA good ol' boys. Praying and thanking Jesus doesn't have a place in the game. Your goaltender does the saving around here.
I also struggle to figure out how hockey struggles to be progressive when its map pretty much overlaps with the more socially liberal parts of the continent: the northeast corridor, the Great Lakes, and the great big land of socialized healthcare. There's also the fact that pretty much every study has borne out that NHL consumers are the most educated, affluent, and tech-savvy of sports fans -- data that's been like the only saving grace of the NHL's marketing department. But if Dan wants to believe that all hockey fans are just fat guys in Steve Larmer sweaters named Ed Zablanski who don't trust them thugs, then I suppose it's too late to change his mind.
