The pre Orbach ones with Chris Noth are pretty good.

Orbach/Noth is the pinnacle of that whole damn show.

Watched the first Orbach one last night

Good stuff

All the ripped from the headline big story ones are cool.

When I was in 7th grade, I watched Law & Order reruns on A&E every night before bed. First few seasons should still hold up pretty well, but once everything was Ripped From The Headlines™ and the spinoffs started up, it got pretty cheesy. I can't imagine the Paul Sorvino episodes being bad; it's Paul f'n Sorvino.

Agreed that Orbach/Noth was the best pairing on the cop side. I liked Michael Moriarty more than Sam Waterston. Moriarty went batshit in real life, though.

The pre-Noth Sorvino episodes are a little slow...you could tell the writers were trying to get their shit together.

It may just be more noticeable because that show had a long run of really good.

Agree on Moriarty over Waterston. Jill Hennessy was my favorite assistant.

I prefer the Orbach/Bratt pairing the best. They seemed to have the most chemistry overall. There's some great gems in the first 8 seasons. There's some crossover episodes with Homicide in seasons 5,6,7,and 8 I think.

I always hated SVU, so I won't be defending that show. I did like Homicide though, and the crossovers were great.

SVU had a few good episodes, but as a whole, it would have been better without Mariska Hargitay.

I just can't see myself watching a show about sex crimes over and over. And the show has been on 10+ yeas now, right? That's alot of rape...

NYPD Blue couldn't hold Hill Street Blues' jockstrap.

"homicide" and "hill street" were the two best cop shows of all time.

I watched the first one. John Spencer was the father of a daughter accidentally killed by a drunk doctor.

Im skipping the first season. Fuck McGreavy or whatever his name is.

I liked NYPD Blue.

Do people not consider The Wire a cop show? That is the greatest TV show of all time.

Man, I gotta get this show on Blu Ray or steal somebody's HBO Go password.

Do you watch Breaking Bad? I always hear the Wire compared with BB

Ya know, I am trying to get into it, but I haven't been able to watch an episode yet without falling asleep. It seems like the show is lacking in likeable characters. I plan to keep working at it, though.

for some reason i couldn't stop laughing. and hill street was good, homicide was great. first nypd angry andy gets shot and left for dead. he's a drunk. at the shows conclusion he has come full circle and is the boss of the squad. great stories in between. love it.

The pace and likeabilty of the characters skyrockets in season 2. Kinda at end of season one

I suppose the matter has been settled, but it's not fair to compare Law & Order--a very good police procedural but still a police procedural--to The Wire, which is something much bigger than that genre.

I still waffle between Wire and Sopranos as best show ever.

There's a great supercut of simulated internet usage from later seasons of Law & Order and it really shows what a relic the program had become. It's like they did what was good enough for 1995 well into 2010.

wasn't meant to be insightful. i was merely addressing the classification of what kind of show it was. "the wire" had more going on than a typical cop show. so, unlike "hill street blues" and "homicide", or even "nypd blue", "the wire" belongs in a category all its own.

i do recommend this new show on sundance called "rectify" (see the thread). it's excellent.

"the sopranos" was the greatest show of all time...for about three seasons. it really went off the rails toward the end. chase had no idea how he wanted to end that show once he wrote himself out of some obvious conclusions. it was a real slap to wall cop out the way he ended it. one of the most promising shows that went empty.

he also gave too much power to terrence winter, one of the most nauseating tv writers out there.
