Dan takes a break from bashing Christianity to go after the Blackhawks for employing Bobby Hull. He has a point but I am sure it will be beaten into the ground and callers will be bad.

By Dan Bernstein
CBSChicago.com Senior Columnist

(CBS) — The Blackhawks’ moral standards are now on paper, and they are public knowledge.

In a letter to the Vice President/General Manager of Comcast Sports Net Chicago, team chairman Rocky Wirtz demanded that reporter Susannah Collins be removed immediately, citing his awareness of comedy videos made years earlier that he found “incredibly offensive to a number of audiences, going well beyond professional athletes.”

He only learned of them after her innocent, unfortunate slip of the tongue last week brought them back to the fore, but it didn’t matter to Wirtz. Although they had been a fully disclosed non-issue upon her hiring, they became instant, retroactive reason for a swift dismissal.

It is within the ‘Hawks’ rights as co-owner of the network to make such a move. They are allowed to be concerned about any connection to their brand that they believe has cast them in any kind of negative light, and they may act accordingly – even if such a move appears abrupt, oversensitive, and heavy-handed, not to mention out of touch.

Some of us may include something else in the category of “incredibly offensive,” however, and that’s violence against women.

As long as we’re digging into personal backgrounds to find ways to protect the pristine image of a franchise, let’s turn a similar spotlight on that of Bobby Hull, the Hall-of-Fame winger who serves currently as an official Blackhawks Ambassador.

Hull’s second wife, Joanne, whom he wed in 1960 and divorced in 1980, told an ESPN documentary in 2002 that she “took a real beating” at his hands. She described an incident during which Hull “threw me in the room, and just proceeded to knock the heck out of me. He took my shoe – with a steel heel – and proceeded to hit me in the head. I was covered with blood. And I can remember him holding me over the balcony, and I thought this is the end, I’m going.”

She filed to end the marriage in 1970 after several more incidents, but they reconciled until Hull threatened her with a loaded shotgun in 1978. Their daughter, Michelle, also described his pattern of behavior to “Sports Century,” and she now works as an attorney specializing in domestic violence.

He remarried in 1984, but the incidents of physical abuse continued for new wife Deborah. Hull was arrested in the parking lot of their Willowbrook condominium in 1986 during a violent domestic altercation, and was eventually convicted for taking a swing at an intervening police officer. Willowbrook Police Chief Steven List said “there was evidence he had struck his wife in the face. She had some contusions, some swelling.”

Good thing for Hull there are no YouTube videos of him doing risqué sketch-satire about sports, huh? He might then be running afoul of Rocky Wirtz’s welcoming embrace.

In 1998, Hull spoke out on behalf of the Nazis and against the speed of growth of the black population in the US, telling the English-language Moscow Times that “Hitler, for example, had some good ideas. He just went a little bit too far.”

Asked if this stance might be described as racist, he replied “I don’t give a damn. I’m not running for any political office.”

He denied making the comments, later blustering about lawsuits that were never adjudicated.

Simply, there cannot be two sets of rules for being a part of the Blackhawks organization. If the silly, debatably-funny bits Collins did were worthy of severing her association with the team despite their existence being known and initially accepted by her employer, then Hull’s ugly history of beating women clearly rises to that level.

Bobby Hull must be deemed similarly unworthy of his role as an official representative of the Chicago Blackhawks.

And not quietly, either. Not in the way that some businesses would, where you just wouldn’t see him for a while, not registering that you haven’t, while his personal information is deleted from the website.
This is a press release, simply announcing that anything done in one’s past is now fair and proper cause to be relieved of one’s Blackhawks duties, and Bobby Hull’s actions are enough that his continued presence can reflect negatively on the franchise. To not condemn, in this case, is to condone.

This is not my standard, created on an emotional whim.

It’s theirs.

Good job Bernstein. This is right on. He also refused to play the "Kane card" which is that Kane should not be used in any commercials or appearances either. He's got pictures and videos on the internet too!

More of this, less religion and beating to death that bad people in Pennsylvania and bike shorts are bad people please.

Good column.

I'd say Hull and Kane have done more for the Hawks than Collins or Mora ever did so they're given more latitude.

He should've mentioned that the Ice Crew and Hot-Girl-Shoots-The-Puck are promoting the very type of thing that Collins was supposedly fired for.

What's really bullshit about this is that it's barely as if Susannah Collins is part of the "Hawks brand." She's a fungible CSN reporter who does desk shows and trivia games and also happens to do postgame interviews at home games. If Rocky's delicate sensibilities were really that offended by a silly dramatic reading of Darryl Dawkins's cunnilingual exploits, JUST TAKE HER OFF HAWKS COVERAGE. They screwed this up big, and now they've backed themselves into a pretty bad corner here.

I would say transition would be fun with Hull, being Macs guy, but I don't think we get one due to White Sox baseball

Where's Beardown? There's got to be more to this Collins story. She must have pissed somebody over there off and they found a reason to fire her.

I'm disappointed to read this stuff about Bobby Hull. I have heard hints about him,but never read the facts. I met him once in person and he could not have been nicer to my young son or me. Bernstein though the article is a good one probably took pleasure in picking on Danny Mac's hero. He is still a prick for doing so. He could have referred to the bad behavior without specifics to keep an elderly legends name above the fray but that's not Bernstein, one angry miserable jagoff. Everybody has warts, some are inexcuseable, but in the case of Hull,I like to think it was more alcholism (not an excuse) than him.

That's my suspicion, too. Otherwise, it doesn't add up. I mean, we were joking about the Jew-Draft episode when she was announced as Kustok's replacement. If we saw it, they saw it. I mean, I think anyone who is savvy enough to look her up on youtube in the wake of Tremendous Amount Of Sex can also figure out that her videos were just some amateur-hour screwing around from three ago and can't possibly reflect the Blackhawks or Comcast. Whether they go with just the slip or the slip as a catalyst for discovering a sordid past that isn't sordid and wasn't discovered, neither chain of events makes any sense. Something's up.

Wirtz letter played role in Collins’ ouster
By Tim Sassone

A letter obtained by the Chicago Tribune written by Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz to Phil Badella, vice president and general manager of Comcast SportsNet Chicago, played a key role in the dismissal of anchor and Hawks reporter Susannah Collins.

Wirtz wrote the letter after discovering Collins' involvement in Sports Nutz, an irreverent series of video shorts that could be deemed offensive by some. Wirtz was none to pleased to find out that Collins co-hosted the show.

"In my opinion and those of others, (the videos) are incredibly offensive to a number of audiences, going well beyond professional athletes," Wirtz wrote. "Had we known of this earlier, we would have raised the issue immediately."

The letter went on to ask CSN Chicago to "remove her from our broadcast immediately."

Collins was fired Thursday night.

The videos, which Collins told her bosses about before she was hired, became a concern to the Hawks this week after Collins made a mistake on the air, saying the Hawks had a "tremendous amount of sex during the regular season," using the word sex instead of success.

That video has gone viral.

The popular Collins has received an outpouring of support from her fans and friends.

CSN Chicago is a partnership between Comcast, the Hawks, Bulls, Cubs and White Sox. Comcast owns about 30 percent of the network and the teams control the rest.

Comcast is still the ultimate DB for not just taking her off the broadcast.

I disagree. The Blackhawks run things with the other teams. The other teams obviously aren't going to care so by saying "Get rid of her" they had to fire her.

Do you really want to be the Comcast BOSSES that have to go to the White Sox and say "Hey, remember that girl the Blackhawks said was too raunchy to interview people shooting the puck, she's now yours!".

Yeah. There's no reason they couldn't have just let the storm pass. So we've now established that you can have girls in skirts cleaning the ice and girls in heels shooting the puck, but you can't say "sex." Also, you can punch a co-worker in the face over the outcome of a sporting event like some out-of-work barfly, but you cannot have done a silly youtube series three years ago. You can hire--and fire--female reporters almost solely on the basis of physical appearance, but they cannot have indicated at some point in the past that they have some semblance of sexuality. CSN is a shit operation.

Good column and Lil Danny is correct. Though JORR hit it on the head in the other thread with this I don't really think the raunchiness is what did her in. It was the minstrel show accents and the Korean and J-ew jokes . Cant poke fun at either of those groups if you're white and expect to keep your job. Sad.

I like Bobby Hull, but li'l danny is right on for once. Kane walks around like Henry Chinaski in Barfly insulting women and talking shit to men, but he's untouchable because he can handle the puck. The Hawks organization should get down off their high horse. And if it were me and I really thought Sports Nutz was that offensive, I'd be so embarrassed that I missed it prior to hiring the broad that I'd just keep my fucking mouth shut about it. They probably wouldn't hire a fucking Zamboni driver if there was a picture of him smoking a joint on Facebook, but they don't even Google their on-air representatives? Even Bebe North knows enough to do that.

Bernstein is absolutely right about firing this girl because she said the wrong word and keeping the wife abuser on the payroll. Rocky Wirtz was kind of revered in Chicago for being better than his father, but this is a clearly a misstep. I would just like to see some pressure put on the Blackhawks for this one.

He is 100% right on with this one. Hull is a piece of garbage. I have heard various interviews with him, and he wasn't so subtle about his stupid thoughts. This just confirms what I already presumed about him. Good for Bernstein on this one.

So Bobby Hull is basically the Brandon Marshall of retired hockey players?

Agreed. Beating your wife with a shoe is a much more egregious offense than any of the verbal diarrhea spewed from Bernsie's mouth.

Danny Mac needs to do a better job picking a hero.

I agree that beating the shit out of a woman makes you a scumbag, but it really doesn't affect me as a fan. Bobby Hull has been genial whenever I've met him or seen him interviewed. I wouldn't call any athlete a "hero", at least not because of his feats on the field or the floor or the ice. I just subscribe to the philosophy that bernstein does when it suits him: Measure them by what they do on the field. None of the other shit matters.

Still, firing Collins makes the Hawks look like asswipes. How long before there is a "Rehire Susannah" webpage?

Bernstein's, and perhaps even more Abbatacola's, outrage over this is very bizarre to me. drinky sounded like he was literally ready to crack a beer bottle and jack somebody up OR cry over this whole thing on Friday's show.

Is Dan REALLY that stunned that an organization doesn't view some bobblehead on the local cable outlet in quite the same light as a legend? I get his overall point, and the hypocrisy is there for all to see, but is he REALLY that "let down" and "bummed" that the Organeyezation would lift Hull up while not-so-silently requesting that Comcast remove an replacement-level talent from the shoot-the-puck bit?

I don't give a crap about Hull, I really don't, but for Dan to NOW suddenly be so outraged over his employ with the team "because" of why they requested that Collins be fired? Well, what are you doin' Wegner? Hull's a prolific scumbag, much like Kane, but he scored a bunch of goals so that (combined with history) tends to gloss over some of the women beating...........until, that is, Dan finds a current event that happens to be related THEN he is sickened by their continued endorsement of the once exiled Hull.

Yeah, I'm pretty surprised everyone in the thread is universally praising the column without mentioning the very obvious part that Collins and Hull aren't even anywhere near close to the same in stature to the Blackhawks. It was obviously wrong and hypocritical, but the outrage over her firing has come across as really phony as well. Since when have professional franchises not had double standards that directly reflect how important the player is to the team? Every single team that anyone on this board has ever watched or rooted for has had double standards in regard to player conduct that they'll tolerate. Ok, let's stop feigning outrage now. Cool.
