Payroll always matters. It's the only reason why anyone even cares about Billy Beane. If he had those results in Boston he would have been fired a long time ago.

From 1995-2010, only 2 World Series winning teams had a lower ranked payroll than the White Sox and every other winner had a higher ranked payroll. It looks like that is true since 2010 too. Payroll always matters.

So you must be a big fan of Billy Beane and must have been extremely frustrated with Kenny Williams every year after 05

2012: 8th
2011: 11th
2010: 10th
2009: 1st
2008: 12th
2007: 2nd
2006: 11th
2005: 13th
2004: 2nd
2003: 25th
2002: 15th

Seems payroll matters less than a lot of people think. So a top 5 payroll was able to win 3 out of 11
and a middling payroll won 6.

No reason to turn this about Kenny. I only mentioned the White Sox because it illustrates the point that even the White Sox beat the odds by winning a title with a lower ranked payroll. To answer your question though, the White Sox underperformed past 2005 with what they were paying.

Interesting that you chose 2002 to stop at. Extend that back to 1995 and see how your numbers work out.

Even stopping in 2002, I see a few outliers but most of the teams were very close to 10th in payroll or better.

I know why you mentioned them.

You are biased for your team and it's former GM. No big deal. It's pretty common.

6 of the last 11 World Series winners were NOT in the top ten in payroll.

13 of the last 18 were. You just happen to be choosing the most convenient time period possible. I don't even know what the results are prior to 1995.

I just added 7 to your number, since from 1995-2001, every team was in the top 10. So if I'm wrong, it's because you are wrong.

Reread what I wrote.

You've made a mistake

Ok.

Well, either way. If payroll is very important, then Billy Beane must be a genius.

He's good. Maybe not "create a movie to celebrate how great he is" good, but he's good.

I don't read.

I was going to watch the movie, but instead I watched my 2005 White Sox World Series Championship dvd.
