Joggers, walkers, etc.,it doesn't hurt to have something to chase away crazed animals or maybe some crazed dude with a knife.

Holy shit! I haven't been on the board in months, but I figured I check the reaction to last night's Bulls game, & saw this thread first. That really sucks Rogue. Glad that your dog will be ok, and I sincerely hope your son doesn't have any lasting effects. I'm sure that was a scary, scary situation for all three of you.

We own a Red Doberman, & he barks every time the wind blows. However, we never let him outside alone, even though we have a six foot fence surrounding the yard. We walk him quite a bit, but we are always very careful around other dogs, people, & especially children. If there are kids around, we'll cross the street just so we don't scare the shit out of the kids/parents. Quite often kids will see him, and want to pet him, but we always tell them no, he bites, even though he's always been great with kids. We also don't let other strange dogs around him either.

Traditionally it is rare that a Doberman will attack another dog unprovoked, but I'm sure it has happened. While a Doberman may not start a fight, he will certainly defend himself, and that won't be good for anyone, especially the other dog. If for some reason he did flip out and attack someone, another dog, or God forbid a child, and he had to be put down because of it.... Scares the shit out of me just thinking about it.

It's all about being a responsible pet owner, and I'd like to think we are. I'm almost certain your dog wasn't the first victim of this mutt.

It may sound strange, but I'd like to see dogs who attack other dogs/people, & their owners, have to register as violent dogs/shitty owners. I'm hesitant to say every single dog that does attack needs to be put down, but their owners should definitely be barred from owning any other dogs in the future. Then again, it's hard enough to get owners to even legally own/register their dog as it is, let alone expect them to take care of them properly to begin with.

Again, sorry this happened to you Rouge, and I hope everything works out ok for you, your family, and your dog. Good luck!

To be fair you did say the dog was behind a high fence with narrow pickets. Under ordinary circumstances that is being responsible. Our dog once got out of our back yard when a meter reader left the gate open (for the record our pooch just went and sat on the front porch). I don't blame you for your reaction or feelings toward the owner but it is certainly possible that it was an accident and they do feel terrible about it.

With the amount irresponsible dog owners out there, carrying some sort of spray isn't a bad idea. You can get a little canister of citronella spray from Petsmart that's pretty effective at stopping an oncoming dog in its tracks, and it doesn't do any permanent damage (not that you would particularly care about the other dog's well being in the heat of the moment).

I'm walking around right now with a nice bite mark on my hand. Sometimes,my own two dogs go at it out of nowhere. I had the bright idea to stick my hand in between them. Even small dogs (Jack Russell) have sharp teeth.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I think my little guy will be ok , after the fact and having time to think about it, I'm angrier now than I was before. One thing ill say though is like many of you ive read stories about dogs being mauled by other dogs and thought, wtf why did the maulees owner just step in and drag the dog away put of the fray. This dog wasn't particularly large and I was kicking the fuck out of him in the ribs for all I was worth and he didn't bat an eye until I smashed the rake on him. I can only imagine what it's like trying to get a pit bull or mastiff or other large breed to stop attacking. It would've been adios to my dog short of taking an axe to it if it were a large dog attacking. Grateful it didn't turn out worse. My dog is sleeping soundly at the moment, though now the adrenaline is gone I'm finding my whole fucking body hurts right now  . So I guess we'll call this one a draw between me and the dog. Next time I'm bringing a gun to this knife fight though . Chicago way FTW !!!

I have heard if you lift a dog off the ground by its tail and one back leg, it will let go. Never tried it, but might be worth a shot.

I had a 185lb mastiff. Sweetest dog there ever was. I always figured he would lick a home intruder. But you never know...if he decided to, he could have killed a man in short order. Unbelievably strong.

That sucks man, but glad your son and dog are ok.

I hope you are able to get them to pay for the vet bills.

My folks had something like this happen when I was like 12. Our dog was on a chain on our porch and a pit bull got loose from his pen and came right up on our porch and latched on to our dog. My father was at work but thankfully a couple neighbors beat the dog off our dog. She was tore up pretty bad and almost lost a leg. The damn folks told the police they would pay all the bills and they never paid a dime.

That's messed up, it probably was the first time the dogs bit someone or another dog, but it is gotta be obvious they are aggressive n trying to get loose. Next time choke him out with your leash ..feel bad for your beagle, he is gonna be shell shocked for awhile.

Vet bill was $283 and I don't even want to deal with these fucking assholes but I guess they found out where I had taken the dog and they took care of it. I guess the owners husband wants me to call him but I have nothing to say that's not going to end up in an argument so im going to let it lie for now.

Such a beautiful day today, and me with a rare weekday off I decided keep rogue jr home from daycare and hang out with him. Mid morning found ourselves walking our beagle with him riding his trike alongside. Pass a house where I could hear some dogs barking aggressively ( I assumed at us but we were on opposite side of street and the fence was high and pickets were close together so I couldn't see in the yard) . We got about 50 ft passed the house and the fucking gate opens and out tears this dog headed straight at us. Dog raced straight for my beagle and latched on to my poor dogs throat trying to tear his throat out . Mind you my son is on his trike right at their level. I start kicking this fucking dog as hard as I can but he isn't budging. My dog is bleeding like hell and yelping. Fortunately someone in a nearby house must've been out doing yardwork and left a rake in the front yard. I run over and grab it , come back to where this dog is still clamped down and buried that fucking rake into the side of his head. That did the trick as he finally let go and yelped away back to his yard. My dog takes off limping and bleeding down the street At this point I'm so fucking hyped up I run over to the dogs house and bang on their door. Some 50 ish woman stares out at me as I proceeded to cuss her out with all the fervor and uncouthness my south side upbringing can muster, including calling her a dumb fucking Caller Bob at least 10 times . At this point several neighbors must've heard what was going on as I'm standing there on her doorstep with a rake in my hands ready to whack her upside the head with it ( at this point I'm assuming dog limped off to die) some guy grabs me and walks me off the doorstep saying he saw it all and called 911 and for me to just concentrate on calming my son down who at this point is crying hysterically at what he just witnessed. Few minutes later the cops show up. A lady who lives down the street had corralled my dog and was walking her back to us. She happened to be a veterinary tech thank god and while my dog had some deep puncture wounds she said she should be ok and to get her to a Er vet ASAP . Cop takes my statement and tells me to go the doc and he will talk to the pet owner, who at this point I want set on fire. Take dog to vet where she has several cuts / wounds but looks like she will be ok but we have to leave her there for a few hours while they take care of her. Cop calls me when I get home , said dogs owner is horribly upset (gee really? ) and that they will be making restitution for vets bill. Also said they were cited for their dog attacking mine , don't know wtf that means big picture, maybe just a fine. This was all about 4 hours ago and I'm just now calming down. I'm just thankful that the dog didn't go straight for my son on his tricycle cuz it could've been a worse though ill not soon forget my dogs look of terror in her eyes as this was going down nor my sons screams. First time in a loooong time I've gone into protect mode and first time like that involving my son and I hope it's the last. Whew. Thanks for letting me rant, feels better typing this all out.

On one hand, what a shithead you had to deal with. That really sucks.

On the other hand, fuck dogs. God damn, I hate dogs.

That is supposed to work, and, if it doesn't, you are supposed to attempt to twist the neck of the biting dog using the leg grip, with using thumbs for complete eye-gouging/removal as a last resort.

That whole lifting hind kegs in air is BS, unless they were just playing very rough..a real determined dog wont relent with that or a hose.. I know your kid will shake it off in a few days but the dog won't forget it, feel bad for that Guy...probably only a matter if weeks/months before this dog fees loose again. Poor ownership n training.

No.
The Leatherman comes in handy 10 times a day at work.
The buck knife comes in handy once a week. Maybe once every two weeks.
Great to have on you.

And fuck you.
