Some angry cook might leave body fluids on your burger:

At least eight of Applebee’s 33 restaurants in the Chicago area are expected to close as its local franchisee seeks to reorganize its operations in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a spokesman said late Tuesday.

The casual-dining chain has 2,000 U.S. restaurants, of which all but two dozen are owned by independent business owners. On April 22, AppleIllinois LLC filed for bankruptcy in the Eastern District of Kentucky. Today, many consumers are trading experiences at restaurants such as Applebee’s for cheaper, faster fare or they’re splurging for a trendier experience.

AppleIllinois plans to sell its franchise rights and its assets, including its restaurants, as part of its bankruptcy proceeding, said Dan Smith, a spokesman for the franchisor.

It plans to close at least eight of its 33 restaurants in the Chicago area but doesn’t rule out more closings, Smith said.

The state of Illinois requires companies to give it notice if there’s a potential for mass layoffs.

That’s why AppleIllinois has informed the state of Illinois of potential layoffs totaling more than 1,700 in Cook, DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, DuPage, Lake, McHenry and Will counties, he said.

“They notified employees at all 33 restaurants,” Smith said.

“But we expect from speaking with the franchisee that several parties will be interested in buying the franchise rights,” said Smith, who doesn’t expect all of them to close.

He said there are multiple reasons why any one franchisee might file for bankruptcy and close restaurants.

“Chicago remains a very viable and important market for Applebee’s,” Smith said.

This place wasn't on my radar. Now Chipotle on the other hand, please don't go shutting those down.

+1

On another note, I noticed that Buca di Beppo in River North was shut down last Friday, & yesterday Al's Beef & Arby's across the street from the DePaul Center were shut down. Not a good time for the restaurant business.

Buca di Beppo has tasty food but it's all frozen, nothing fresh. I used to go to the one on Milwaukee ave and was amazed how quickly it was served. I started noticing the food was never "piping hot". Fuck that place.

Had a bad experience at an Applebees about 5 years ago. Bad service, bad food and filthy silverware.
They just opened a Tilted Kilt here in town so I have been going there. As you can imagine the talent
is a bit shaky but I am confident they'll get it together.

She's a little hottie...

Yes there are a few really cute ones there... and a few not so cute. Apparently you can't get a job there
if you don't have at least one tattoo on your side.

Place has always been a dump, nobody who works at an Applebees cares about their jobs and generally hates their lives....doesn't make for quality food

Me too. Well, the silverware was acceptable.

However, I did a neighbor a favor and they got us a gift card for Applebees as a thank you. I was pleasantly surprised at how good things were and we've been back since. I've become pretty snobbish about the national restaurant chains after a series of mediocre meals at places like Fridays, Chili's, and Applebees too but I still liked it.

It has been a nice addition to the local food options. Used to be an Old Country Buffet so I am glad they
were able to fill the space with something decent.

I like the place. Have the Orange chicken bowl every time. Of course out here in DeKalb we can't really get too snobbish.

I betcha the one in Dekalb stays open. It's always full.

There are tons of better options in Dekalb.

Fatty's, Lord Stanley's, McDonalds, and Pizza Hut are all better choices.

I think the building across the street from the DePaul Center is going through either renovations and/or ownership changes. I believe those places closed for lease issues.

Nobody in Chicago should be eating at Applebees. Those restaurants are for country folk who drive into the county seat on a weekend night for their "fine dining". There are plenty of good burger places or bar and grills without having to resort to chains.

I don't mind our local Applebees but have been in ones that I would never go back in again.
