Who stays?
Who goes?
How good could this team have been if they added a professional third baseman and a few bullpen pieces?

I think Wood and Villanueva will help in the Wild Card run next year.

Garza, we'll have to see how he comes back, but I wouldnt mind keeping him.

Trade Feldman for anything

They will trade Villanueva and Feldman, if they can get a good prospect for them. But if they can't get a highly rated prospect, the idea of a rotation with 4-5 guys you feel give the team a decent chance to win .....that works. The other guys go into the bullpen. God knows it can use an upgrade. Jackson would be most deserving of the domotion, but because of his high salary, I doubt they will make that move.

if there's one thing I don't trust Theo on, it's trades.

Draft yes. Trades no. So I hope they keep everybody but Feldman.

Why no go on trades?

I only want Feldman, Gregg, and maybe Garza gone

No way the rotation is great with Jackson still in it.

Why trade Villanueva?

Why? Your lack of trust makes zero sense.

Rizzo and Wood are kind of working out really well for the Cubs.

Trade him for Gavin Floyd. His best years might well be ahead of him!!

CoF,
curious why you don't trust Theo on trades. The only head scratcher for me was Marshall for Wood, which is now proving to have good value.

Ian Stewart/Colvin didnt really work out

In Boston the trade with the Marlins was a big part of why they won the 2007 Series, but some say that wasnt Theo (it may have happened during his brief time away from the team when he almost left)

Colvin isn't even in the majors. It wasn't an amazing trade, but it wasn't "bad."

Neither is Ian Stewart

And Colvin's value went up with that season last year. Could have used that valuable chip.

His value is zero now, though. We can use all the information we have on the trade now. And again, while it wasn't a good trade, I wouldn't rather have Tyler Colvin on the Cubs right now.

I disagree. A still youngish left hander who can hit 20 homeruns in a season is not worthless.

Ian Stewart on the other hand, is worthless

Until Theo pulls a Pierre or Garza type fuck up then I fully trust his trading abilities. So far more Ws than Ls in his Cubs career.

They are like 1 year apart in age. Stewart plays an "open" position for the Cubs, and makes less money than Colvin, fwiw. Stewart also hit 25 and 18 HRs in his last 2 full seasons prior to being traded to the Cubs.

Colvin can stay healthy. Stewart was damaged goods when they got him.

Also, people seem to hate Ian Stewart.

The cubs would be better off with Colvin, imo.

Well, if people seem to hate Stewart, you're probably right 8)

Trade Feldman and Garza; trade Gregg only if you get something decent .... don't need to waste bad innings because you can't close a game properly.

Shoot Marmol out back behind the lawncare shed.

Colvin had a great run while Stewart was sucking it up!

Stewart also had a 25 HR season

Theo know this team needs 3B and took a chance, basing it ont he fact he wasnt going to keep Colvin around anyways.

I just wish Stewart would get healthy so can finish the final phase to his experiment and move on.

Probably. But I feel bad for even spending time on that topic, considering both players are bad.

What about the trades they made at last years deadline? Did they get anyone who could be a useful piece in the future? Has Vizcaino started throwing yet? Does Villanueva look like a future major leaguer? What about Loux? Wasn't there another pitcher from Atlanta (Chapman?)? Better hope they do a better job at this years deadline than they did at last years.

Loux could pan out. He isn't doing great in AAA but he has had good minor league success before. Villenuva isn't hitting at all in AA. Chapman has a 17 ERA which is pretty damn hard to get. Hendricks is doing pretty well in AA. Carreno is on Iowa's roster but hasn't played. I read somewhere that Vizcaino started throwing bullpens in Spring training and has been doing his rehab since camp broke with AA. That sounds weird but its all I have heard.

What is confusing me is that I thought Soto was traded for Brigham and it says in many places that he was yet Brigham is still pitching for the Rangers AA team.

The Cubs need to keep these pitchers like Wood, Villanueva and Garza, if only because they need someone to pitch. They just stockpiled on pitchers last draft and will likely do it again in the next draft. It will take 2-3 years before they know if they any of these picks will pan out.

I would hang on to Wood for sure. He is a lock for the rotation of the future. Villanueva is probably worth more to keep than the middling prospect they would get back. Garza should get a much better haul but they better not miss. I would want 1 mlb ready pitcher and 1 decent AA prospect.

Have completely avoided watching the team this year. How has Wood been?

Great. The era is in the high 2's . 3 wins. I think he has 4 maybe 5 quality starts.

Feldman was awful in spring training and in his first few starts of the season. But he has 3 very good starts in a row now. The first 2 were against the Marlins and Padres, so they could be dismissed to some degree. But the last one against the Rangers suggests he may be better than many (including myself) had thought. The sinker has good action and he locates well. Wood has been solid and Samadzjia as well. Villanueva began the season real well, but has tailed off a bit in his last 2 starts. He needs to get back to the form he showed in his first 5 games. Add Garza and dump Jackson into the bullpen and the rotation is indeed solid. Then there is the bullpen...
