I don't often hang out in Addison but I had heard about a disgraced cop turned house painter who could give Johnny Petraglia a run for his money and I wanted to check him out. When I arrived I was highly disappointed. This legendary man was bowling in a women's league. Not only that, but he was only averaging 162 for the season.

My disappointment turned quickly to joy was I wandered down to lanes 31-32 where several bearded men in Phish t-shirts were open bowling. Now these fellows could bowl! And they were gambling for significant stakes as well. The best bowler in the group was the one they called "Chus" (it rhymes with shoes). Every ball was dead in the hole. If not for a few taps and a ball that was too good and left the eight pin, he may have rolled a perfect series. As it was, he scored 829 for the three game set. It's always a pleasure to watch a good bowler in action.

As I was leaving, the St. Bede's Ladies' Auxiliary League was just finishing up. The house painter I had come to see had shot 413 for his series and was in the parking lot shaking down three black teenagers for a bag of weed. I got in my Buick Riviera for the long ride back to Streeterville and popped in a Doors cassette. Strange Days.

Yes. Gleefully so.

I have not, and I've only bowled at Stardust once.

Is that right?

When I pronounce it in my mind, which is often, I always think "Chuz".

It would have been funnier if it was " I knew Chas when he shot 800 at Stardust Bowl"

His last comment before leaving the Board a while back referred to it becoming a "bathhouse".

That's funny. I've only bowled once in my life and it was at Stardust.
