Theo's edge is developing a minor league system. So you're calling him a failure after one draft. Nice!

Yeah, time has healed the Hendry wounds for me. He oversaw the greatest stretch of Cubs baseball in my life. He went for it and failed, and given the fat wallet again I have no doubt he would have overspent his way back to that again.

I dont really care about the farm system. I want the major league team to win games. Do that in the best way you can.

Certain fans of certain radio shows (hey buddy) seem to value being right or "smarter than the average fan in their own mind" over their own teams success.

These people will almost always be negative because its a safer bet.

Less likely to get your heart broken that way.

The White Sox got me in 2010 and part of last year. Never again.

Bulls? 2011. Never again.

no...it's called being rational. All the best moves in the world don't necessarily net you a world series. I won't believe Theo can bring a world series until he does.

So, expect failure until you actually succeed. Yeah, sounds rational.

I sorta get that for the Cubs. Special case. Doesnt make sense with other teams/sports

That's just how Cubbie Nation is. It won't change until Cubbie Nation is sipping from the World Series trophy.

So if you dont believe Theo can win a WS here do you think anyone can? I suppose what I am asking is why you are a fan?

If you think that one of the better GMs in the game cant get the job done, why do you even bother? Especially someone in your position that spends much more of their own money on the team.

I thought Theo could. Then the Cubs played "tighten the purse strings" and "we couldn't possibly rebuild on the fly" and "we may just keep moving the goalposts". My only hope is that a tv deal materializes out of nowhere and fans come back when the Cubs are decent.

So Theo gets 1 year and that's it... You are quite the hanging judge.

Let's see what transpires over the course of this season and the offseason. If they go into 2014 ready to tank another season then I will tip my cap and admit you were right.

Read the Francona book. Theo never wanted to spend the big money at the end of his tenure. That decision was forced on him by Lucchino and Werner. How Theo spent in can certainly be questioned. Though, most applauded Theo for getting Crawford and Gonzalez when those signings happened. The Adrian Beltre pillow contract worked out well. The Bobby Jenks, John Lackey, and Mike Cameron signings were pretty bad.

that's how accurately predicting something works...you say it BEFORE it becomes obvious to everyone else. We shall see.

Cubs have no pitching, and there's little realistic path for them to acquire it. Plus, they're the Cubs. Theo's fall is in fact inevitable.

Not really. It was a shout out to Joe Orr Road, not our illustrious board member. It was still funny to hear though.

EDIT: Asked and answered by redskingreg.

Do you think Theo will get another job in baseball or is he out of the game forever?

Not exactly accurate.

They dont have a lot of pitching in the minors but they have three decent starters under 30. Thats not worthless.

They'll have to hit in the draft and in free agency/trades but to say they have none is incorrect.

1. Except you didn't think Theo could because you've already written him off after 1.25 years on the job.
2. Tightening the purse strings is what you want since it'll prevent Theo's from making mistakes in free agency. You've made yourself clear his track record isn't to your liking.
3. Rebuilding on the fly is nearly impossible without utilizing free agency, or having minor league prospects waiting in the wings to either trade for established talent or plug in. Again, you've stated you don't want Theo to dip his toes into free agency. But the Cubs minor league system was bare when he got here so that plan couldn't have worked either.
4. The goalposts haven't been moved. Theo has always been vague as to when the Cubs will be ready to compete for a division. You're moving the goalposts and blaming Theo.
5. Why does a TV deal matter? To spend money on players? Well, you don't want Theo to have money to make mistakes in free agency. That leaves using the extra revenue in either signing homegrown players or young studs (ex: Justin Upton, Miguel Cabrera etc.) acquired via trade. Both of those things require the development of minor leaguers which requires time.

None in any relevant time-frame of competitiveness. They're certified garbage for at least 3 more years, and then the little pitching they do have will be bad.

First off, I've written him off partly because of things outside his control. You should read my first post in this thread.

Secondly, I said his trade record was not to my liking. I was joking about free agency thereafter.

Third, rebuilding on the fly is exactly what the A's did last year. Not only did they rebuild, they made the playoffs and didn't even sneak in. That they lost is an indicator of nothing. They did the hard part.

Four, the goalposts inevitably WILL MOVE. Mark my words. Technically they haven't moved yet because the Cubs REALLY HAVEN'T EVEN SET THEM YET. Everyone else has.

Fifth, the TV DEAL IS WHAT THE CUBS ARE AIMING FOR AS THE FIX ALL. Not City of Fools. The Cubs. And I don't care if Theo's got a ton of money to spend or a little...I just want him to spend it well. Not trade for Ian Stewart. There is no such thing as an unimportant trade to a good GM.
