Even though Indiana was clearly the better team in the East Semifinals over an overrated Knicks' team that I was never sold on, I wonder if HC Frank Vogel may have provided bulletin board material when he said that the NBA Champion Heat stood in their way & LeBron James took exception at practice yesterday. While I do think the Pacers have a chance to steal Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals in Miami Wednesday night, considering the fact the Heat will have had 7 whole days between eliminating the Bulls in the other East Semifinal and the start of this next series, I'm not so sure Indiana has enough to win 4 of a possible 7 with the NBA Champs.

If you listen to what was said, Vogel said nothing disrespectful.

Here's what Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel said after his team won Game 6 against the New York Knicks on Saturday night to earn an Eastern Conference finals matchup with the top-seeded Miami Heat, who ousted Indiana in the second round of last year's postseason:

"This is not about getting back at Miami," Vogel said. "If you're in the final four, you're competing for a championship. You're competing for a championship. And they're just the next team that's in our way."

Here's how that quote was misrepresented to Heat star LeBron James after Miami's practice on Sunday, according to FOX Sports Florida's Chris Tomasson:

Reporter to LeBron: “Vogel kept saying last night that you guys are just another team."
And here's how LeBron responded to that (which, again, is totally not what Vogel said):
“We’re not just another team. I don’t understand what he’s saying. But we’re not just another team. It’s not true. [...] We’re not just another team. We’re a great team. We’re very confident. We’ll be ready for them. But if we’re just another team, you really don’t prepare for just another team. We’re not just another team. You got to be prepared for us."

Here's how Vogel responded to James' response to something he never even said, as related by Pacers.com's Scott Agness on Monday morning:

"Sorry sports world, the words 'just another team' never came out of my mouth," he said. "Great respect for LBJ and the champs. Looking forward to [a] great series."

So, naturally, we're probably mere moments away from the MVP being told about Vogel's "blatant disrespect for El BJ and the chumps," because Game 1 doesn't tip off until Wednesday night and dangit, people have to talk about something, even when it's nothing.

I'll tell you this right now, RP. ESPN "SportsNation" might cheer for the Pacers to knock off the Heat, but ABC bosses aren't. A Pacers/Grizzlies or Pacers/Spurs' NBA Final might be enough for the casual fan to steer clear. It might be the lowest rated NBA Finals ever, even worse than the Spurs taking LeBron's Cavaliers to school in 2007.

There was a similar divide when it came to the choice of that team drafting Reggie Miller vs. Steve Alford.

how much do you really love basketball, as a state, if you take the lesser player?

TP, the Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies aren't exactly "Must See TV". I'm not making this up. If that's your NBA Final next month, the casual fan who doesn't watch the NBA that much isn't watching.

Don't know much about this, but is race still a big deal in this context?!? Since the top players on both teams in this series are African-American, what would be the logic of someone rooting for one team over the other based on race?

I hate to say it, but it's "Fire & Passion" vs. "Pampered NBA Thugs". There's a certain segment of the population that simply would not root for a team like Miami. Those people would be tuning out completely had New York advanced.

I agree. I will admit I love to hate the Heat, but the more I watch, I don't think Indiana has a shot in hell. They just don't have the horses on offense. It's a weak field.

I'd agree completely only if Wade was healthy. If he's not 100%, the Heat will still probably win, but I'm sure there'd be more second guessing with every game.
