Youth Sports should be about participation. High School sports should also be about participation until Varsity.

Our goal on lower levels is to play as many kids as reasonably possible. Winning is second.

If this kid was faster he would of been running. However, you do not see many Freshman running varsity unless the team is not very good or they are just filling in an event.

What do you consider lower levels? If you are talking about Park District/House leagues, then I agree. But when you get into travel leagues, it changes a lot. Kids no longer are given equal playing time and sometimes might not play much at all in some games. But travelling team level play is only for the better players and they want to compete against the better competition.

I am not sure that I entirely agree with your last point. Some coaches try to reward Seniors for their past years of dedication and give them their opportunity to shine over a freshman or sophmore who will have plenty of opportunity in the future. Not always the case, but sometimes. He may have been faster and never given the chance to run those sprints. Then again, he may have run them in practice and been found to be slower than those chosen to run them. Need more info.

Maybe 20 years ago. The majority of travels teams are not very good.

If the kid was worth the 40 million his dad is suing for my guess is he would be running.

I also took a quick glance at Dyestat. They have a couple of kids who are decent middle distance types and their sprinters are average at best. Bad 4x1 times and decent 4x2 times. Which tells me the kid is not that fast and was probably at best close to the upper clansmen. I'm sure dad and work ethic didn't help things.

I just wonder what times this kid had in the 200, 400 etc.. the previous year in 8th grade races and compare those times with the times the Seniors chosen to run instead wound up with.
