Storm chaser and meteorologist Tim Samaras, his storm chaser partner Carl Young, 45, and his son Paul Samaras, 24, were among the 11 people killed in the latest round of tornadoes and severe weather to hit Oklahoma Friday night, according to family members.

They were killed near El Reno in an EF3 tornado with winds up to 165 mph that ripped through the Oklahoma City area during rush hour.

Tim Samaras, 55, dedicated the last three decades to learning about tornadoes while he successfully combined his passion for storm chasing and an engineering career.

ABC News meteorologist Ginger Zee knew Tim Samaras well and said his death was a reminder of the power of the storm.

"Out of all storm chasers he doesn't take chances, he's the one that puts the probes in the path of the tornado to learn more about them. He is not, you know, a young gun running around making bad decisions person, so I am so sad and shocked, it is such a loss for the community. He was a pioneer, he was getting things and teaching us things that no one else could do. This is a guy who was not just a meteorologist, he's an engineer, he's one of the smartest men I have ever met in my life," she said.

"The National Geographic Society made 18 grants to Tim for research over the years for field work like he was doing in Oklahoma at the time of his death, and he was one of our 2005 Emerging Explorers. Tim's research included creation of a special probe he would place in the path of a twister to measure data from inside the tornado; his pioneering work on lightning was featured in the August 2012 issue of National Geographic magazine," Garcia said in a statement. "Though we sometimes take it for granted, Tim's death is a stark reminder of the risks encountered regularly by the men and women who work for us. This is an enormous loss for his family, his wide circle of friends and colleagues and National Geographic."

Twistex, his research organization, on Facebook, wrote:
it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to share this news... on Friday, May 31, Tim Samaras, his son, Paul Samaras, and Carl Young lost their lives in the El Reno, OK tornado. This is a devastating loss to the meteorological, research, and storm chasing communities. I ask that you keep the families in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. There is some comfort in knowing these men passed on doing what they loved... Your support means the world. Thank you.

Any chance his family will sue the tornado, Spiral Stairs? Or possibly God?

Storm chasers are idiots. If there are giant tornadoes, seek shelter. #bernstrong

Kind of agree.

feel for the family, but if I chose to follow killers for a living, chances are one day they are going to kill me, thus I dont follow killers. Never know one day it turns ugly.

I wouldn't worry about it. He was a fairly obscure player anyway.

He does live in tornado alley.

He is definitely a weather nerd, as evidenced by his tweets.

I hope that when I die that people say the same things about me: He died doing what he loved which was arguing with FavreFan on the internet.

Mile Wide Tornado: Stormchasers Tribute: Tim Samaras storm chaser tribute to air on Discovery

By: Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Discovery Channel says it will honor three veteran storm chasers who died in Oklahoma with a special airing this week.

The program, "Mile Wide Tornado: Stormchasers Tribute," will feature scenes of Tim Samaras, his son Paul and Carl Young from the former series "Stormchasers." It airs at 10 p.m. EDT Wednesday.

The men spent years capturing and sharing storm videos with TV viewers and weather researchers. They died Friday when a tornado with winds of up to 165 mph turned on them in the Oklahoma City area. The storm and flooding claimed more than a dozen other lives.

@reedtimmerTVN: El Reno tornado on May 31 just upgraded to #EF5. Went from less than a mile to 2.6 miles wide in around 30 sec. Widest #tornado in history

@wxBender: 295 mph wind measured less than 500ft above ground from OU RaXPol rapid-scan doppler radar. EF5 El Reno #tornado May 31, 2013. #okwx

Definitely caught them off guard
