The Sox take another "athlete". Maybe one day they'll start drafting ballplayers. Billy Beane was smart enough to know he was a bust as a player and he avoids drafting guys like himself like they are the plague. Kenny Williams tries to draft versions of himself every year and they never work out. He was a bust and so are they.

I'd take the athlete every time.

Why have the Cubs drafts with Wilkins pretty much sucked? Isn't his thing drafting athletes? Just curious since you know what you're talking about with draft/minor leaguers.

Wilkens thing wasn't drafting athletes it was drafting bat speed. Vitters and Baez had the best bat speed in the draft. Colvin and Jackson were also considered to have great bat speed.

I think the Sox problem is more that they draft guys with big power and absolutely no clue about the strike zone

The Sox have enough of them hitting .230 in the minor leagues. They look great doing it though.

Hard to judge a draft after one day. I guess it was fine.

Drafting is only half the equation. Draft athletes and develop them into ballplayers. De Aza obviously never developed into a ball player.

Your hate for DeAza is completely and totally irrational given how poorly other guys on the Sox have performed this year.

I was pretty excited until I heard KW was involved. At least the little guy has put up huge stats in JC. I recall they drafted another JC SS, Dallearo. He couldn't even hit in JC.

That dude the Cubs picked looks like Dave Kingman, which wouldn't be bad I suppose. .329 BA in major college is pretty damn poor. Don't tell RPB though.

They had to trade away Mc Carthy because he and Anderson were more interested in drinking till all hours than working at their craft

McCarthy was traded for John Danks. KW won that deal.

With Hudson having to (likely) get a second Tommy John surgery, he's won the Edwin Jackson trade too.

I love the Sox 4th round pick Andrew Mitchell from TCU. He's a lot like last years 2nd rounder Chris Beck in they were both considered first round talents coming into the draft but they dropped due to an up and down season.

Mitchell (6'3" 220) is workhorse type pitcher with with a very strong arm. He has a low to mid 90's fastball and a big hammer curveball. His command comes and goes and he needs to develop his change up. If he can be more consistent with his mechanics and develop his change he can be a middle of the rotation starter. If not he's a nice power arm for the bullpen.

Bah. Two under .500 guys. I guess I'll take the lefty. But I wouldn't really say anyone "won" anything with that one.

Brace for Hawk jumping off a bridge today or at least silencing himself for the entire game....... The Orioles and not the Sox drafted the grandson of none other than the legendary and great Yaz!!!!!
