Even though the rate of divorce in the US has remained largely stable in recent years, American divorce lawyers and academics have joined Middle East analysts in picking out Facebook as a leading cause of relationship trouble, with American lawyers now demanding to see their clients' Facebook pages as a matter of course before the start of proceedings.

I'd also like to see how closely divorce rates are intertwined with rising financial independence figures across both genders. Much of the pre-industrial revolution world's marriages were based on a range of socioeconomic factors, including the practical aspect of transferring a woman's financial dependence from her father to a new spouse and his family. Now that we're well into an era of seeing much in the way of financial autonomy among women, I suspect divorce rates in the U.S and Europe are partially tied to increased female capacity to exert choice, i.e. to divorce, due to their income potential and independence, when compared against the lower numbers of divorces in earlier ages. In other words, women are more capable today of exiting bad marriages without suffering debilitating socioeconomic consequences, and that's progress. Here's a brief article I read some time ago on marriage and sex in medieval Europe for context: http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Italia ... pouses.php

the first thing you do when you meet a girl is look at her facebook page. daily updates mean automatic rejection. i do tolerate an update every few days or whatever, as long as its something worth noting, but any chick that has to tell the world how great her last tanning experience was is a fucking idiot.

Aside from the Facebook effect I find the divorce rate numbers questionable

It went up up up to 50-51ish then just stops forever?

Seems like more than 50 percent to me

I'm 32. Most of my friends who are married did so in last four years. None are divorced as of now. I attribute that to waiting longer into life.

It could just be that divorce is more gossip friendly than solid marriage so ya hear more about the bad ones

I think post 28 marriages are a much better success rate

While it sounds all nice and pleasant that more people can afford to get divorced than ever before I don't think it is the kind of progress we need as a society. If anything the age of the Internet has made sexual temptation greater than ever before in terms of giving people more options. No longer does one need to purchase a pornographic magazine, visit an adult theater, visit a sex shop for merchandise, visit a massage parlor or strip club. The Internet provides all those services courtesy of *** sites, Craig's list and other sites where people randomly meet others for sexual escapes. If anything the Internet has made us worse off as a society because younger and younger people have access to ***. Don't blame Facebook blame ***.

Could not agree more, even though I have no figures to back it up. This is anecdotal evidence, as it is only from my perspective, but most of the friends I have who got married right after high school are divorced (not all). Most of my friends who waited to get married until they already led an adult lifestyle are still married (not all). Again, with no statistics, I would propose that this is because waiting until you are an adult reveals the person you really are (or will be) before latching onto someone. Just my thoughts.

This is exactly why a certain former poster here's wife would not let him have a facebook account

i read about this story a few weeks ago. that letter is full of so much smugness it's really hard to believe this is coming from someone who actually gave a shit about their relationship in the first place. it screams to be noticed in order to get a "you go girl!" reaction.

there's nothing redeeming about, and it's too calculated and crafted with too good a penmanship to give it credit as an actual break up letter. even if it is real, this chick is the type of dumbass bitch that probably met her boyfriend at a bar on a saturday night and he "seemed so nice" because he bought her a shot while she was out with her gilrfriends to celebrate another weekend of independence from being out of college.

I know nothing about this story but my reaction was the same -- too well-written, penmanship too nice, no mistakes or scratchouts. How many people have a red pen at the ready? And who writes a breakup letter in a clean spiral composition book with no preceding pages torn out?

If I was not so certain that everything you read on the internet is true I would have to guess that letter is bogus.

Divorce as an industry is big business, at least 10x's as much GDP is spent annually on divorce and the attendant trappings of legally separating 2 people than is spent per year on weddings. As expensive as those are, the average wedding cost pales in comparison to the cost of the average divorce. You'd be hard-pressed to pay for both sides attorneys fees in a divorce from beginning to end for the total cost of the average wedding. And that's just the lawyers. there's a shit ton of other bullsht surrounding divorce that generates economic activity--courts, therapists, movers, child-welfare agencies, etc, etc.

Seems like once a couple dip their toe in the pool of a potential divorce, the system is set up to make it happen rather than try to save the marriage.

From observing divorced couples where there are minor children involved, all of a sudden one or both parents is far more interested in every detail of the other's life than they ever were when they were married.
