I was talking to someone recently and he said that for what some people pay to go to a pro sports playoff game they could just as easily purchase a really big TV to watch it at home and even use some of the money for a TV service as well.

A family of four spends a couple hundred bucks all together for a major sporting event

So I would say its more like 2 sporting events = a Nice TV

I was working under the assumption you were scalping tickets to the playoff game... i.e, you aren't going to get a family of four tickets to the NBA Finals for $50 a seat w/ free parking and then sit there and eat or drink nothing.

Using tiqiq.com, I looked up prices for Game 3 of the Heat/Spurs -- they are asking $355 for the cheapest ticket. For Hawks/Kings, it is $419... assume these end up going for half that price, and you're looking at $700 or 800 just in tickets for four people to go.

Oh yeah, playoffs are off the charts

I was just going a run of the mill game. When I said MAJOR event, I meant as opposed to the Wolves or Cougars

Watching television isn't the same as being at a game. Chatting on Facebook isn't the same as meeting a friend at a bar. Discussing business over a Porterhouse isn't the same as using Go-To-Meeting. And jerking off to X-Hamster isn't the same as getting laid.

playing a $110 guitar is not like playing a $2,700 guitar.

Come on, Doug! I'm sure you can pull some sweet sounds out of a $50 pawn shop special.

In that case, I recommend the Harden Switchblade.

 That hurts me very deeply, Doug. The Switchblade is a work of art.

With $2700 worth of pedals you sure could.

That's right. I can throw a strike with a chipped 14 lb. house ball and I can rock your liver with a five-stringed Harmony piece of shit.

Most of my live sports attendance is family time. I will be spending that money one way or another. I find sports to be much more conducive to bonding than something like a movie and certainly better than watching TV.

I'd agree but throw Sirloin in there between Strip and Filet...along with something like five or six line breaks.

No, it's actually better unless you have rich man tickets. My point is that unless you're sitting on the floor or close to the floor at the United Center you see a much better game on a big screen TV. Football, baseball and hockey are the same way, especially football. Watching the game at home is awesome because you get to pause, rewind, skip commercials, go to the bathroom and eat and drink whatever you want without paying the big money. Most of all you're not sitting in some tight seat with strangers getting drunk next to you as you listen to deafening sound systems and people using profanity.

Baseball and hockey are always better live. Football is better on TV. Watching basketball is rough from the 300 level.

Well, I guess it depends on what you're after. The NFL is a made-for-TV sport. I've never been to an NFL game, but I've seen plenty of college football live and watching on television is no substitute for being there, even if it is much easier to analyze the line play from your couch with multiple replay angles.

It all depends on where you're sitting. As much as I would enjoy sitting on the floor at the Bulls game I know I would get years more use out of that big TV.

Is baseball better live when its 40 degrees out and sideways raining?
(If its WS05 Game II, yes...)

I like hockey and basketball from the 300 level as long as you are on an end or curve.
Hockey on the blueline glass is fun, but you miss 25% of the action.

That's the biggest thing that the sports leagues are scared of, football especially has to compete with the home experience.

I think I read on profootballtalk, that one stadium was going to make where you come to the game and you can watch other games while your there
