I was always of the opinion that Brooks was an unquestionable comedic genius. He has had a career that has spanned generations. His movies have been popular throughout that time and many seem to be held up in the pantheon of comedic films.

I've watched a couple lately and the jokes are really grade school crap in so many cases. This has got me questioning my beliefs in the man.

Brooks is a genius. Some of the later stuff not so good but still I would watch Robin Hood men in Tights than most of the shit that comes out now. You want to see how good he is find a copy of Ceasers Writers. It was a get together of all the people involved with Your Show of Shows. Writers Producers and Sid.Only one who did not show was Woody Allen. There is a story about at the Emmy's one year. Everyone won one but Mel. He jumps up on the table and shouts at the top of his lungs"There is no God". It is a hard find but worth it for all the backstage stuff.
Go watch an uncut Blazing Saddles. That movie could not be made today. It blazed"Pun Intended" a trail for other gritty comedic stuff.

I don't know if genius is apropos, but I certainly don't think hack is warranted either. Personally my favorites are Blazing Saddles and History Of The World. I'll watch Young Frankenstein if it's on, and Men In Tights and the Star Wars spoof are ok. I know The Producers is highly regarded, and has made him a shit ton of money, but to me it's meh. You can keep the rest.

Blazing Saddles pretty much tentpoled his entire career. Young Frankenstein, History of the World, both very good. Robin Hood, eh, Dracula, meh, etc.

even Blazing Saddles has some dragged out moments. The first time Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder meet in the jail, it's like 5-7 minutes of boring. I really really like Young Frankenstein. Not a genius but very good.
