So many questions and so many suggestions. I'll get to as many as I can on the first two pages and to the rest of it later in the week.

A few random thoughts first. I'm intrigued by "the sky is falling" approach after our first crappy book in four years. Only a fool wouldn't strutinize such results, but I believe there always has been an attempt to make it better. We always are talking about it in production meetings... we talk to listeners about it at event broadcasts and on these boards. Nobody is overreacting on our show. We know we didn't get stupid overnight.

That doesn't mean some of your suggestions aren't 100 per cent accurate, however. Too singy. Too many obscure jersey numbers. Nobody has mentioned it, so I will: too much Sox/Cubs bets and subsequent tailgate talk. Too much irrelevant almanac stuff. Too much "who the producer is dating" stuff. Too many trips to the penalty box. Maybe too much golf conquests talk. I'm just spitballing recalling some of your posts. I'm sure I've missed a few.

Different things make different people roll their eyes and/or punch the button. We're trying to minimize them and "freshen it up." We will do better radio and we will put the title belt back on again.

Killer V is curious about ESPN/Disney effecting conservative changes.

The company has a high standard. It wants to avoid controversy. It requires its employees to comport themselves in a mature, dignified manner. I agree with those standards. Would I favor saying anything and everything that comes to our minds? Sure, but it doesn't work that way so I will abide by their guidelines and produce an entertaining show without things like toilet talk or name calling.

Hawkeye says I'm the only guy who can keep Harry in line.

Not sure why it;s that way. Maybe he's afraid of me and not the others. Sorry I was gone so long. I'm gone again August 13-17. Jurko also is gone. We try to sync up vacations. Jurk and I can coordinate usually, but Harry and his children sometimes have differing schedules. And don't think I haven't wondered if he absolutely plans to be there when we're not so he can unleash "Harry & Spike" Harry.

WDelaney ponders my no-compete clause.

I have to duck you and say, at this point on the calendar (and the next several) it is the last thought on my mind.

PeterPuck suggest "ESPN fatigue" and the network hurts itself with affiliations with uninteresting properties, such as the WNBA, AFL, etc.

Interesting thought. Television, regardless of operation, is incredibly protective of its properties. ESPN is no different than Fox or CBS or NBC. ESPN has more well-branded properties, such as SportsCenter, Baseball Tonight, etc., so it is perhaps more noticeable. Profit is extremely important to all businesses, not just broadcasting. Companies from all sects of business probably are willing to compromise some "product" to some degree, if they can profit, especially is the gain is significant.

Spaulding wonders who I would prefer to hear before us, soon to be a noon-to-2:00 shift.

My first thought is Jiggetts and North. The Monsters were an awesome show to precede Boers and me. Since that isn't possible and it will emanate from the East... I guess I'm intrigued by Steven A. Scott Van Pelt is a solid SportsCenter anchor and a terrific golf reporter, but I don't suppose that means anything as a Chicago radio show presence.

Oak Brook Joe asks which employee has hurt the radio station the most in the last couple years.

Maybe the employee we haven't had. Until recently, we didn't have an experienced promotions/marketing manager. That always frustrated me. A successful station needs a skilled promoter to handle the crap stuff, like t-shirt distribution, golf outing organization, etc., and the important stuff like cutting deals with airlines for trade, working with the sales dept. on advertising power lunches, etc. We hired some dude named Ron, who looks a little like Adam Delevitt about six weeks ago. I haven't been there enough to know much about the cat as of this date. Eager to see him go to work.

Frank Coztansa wants to go fishing in Canada (by proxy).

Best fish was my 16-year-old's 18 1/2 smallmouth, probably about five pounds. We released it, of course. Fishing wasn't great. A cold front moved through the week before and also met us, as did high winds and a hail storm. We did have three shore lunches with walleyes and brought home just shy of our walleye and northern limits. It was a great trip. Also saw a bear (not Tank Jonhson), several eagles (not Andy Reid or Brian Westbrook) and many deer.

Denisdman asks about something already answered, but adds that Waddle, like Salisbury before him, is an "uncommitted" co-worker of mine.

Disagree. Salisbury didn't even live here. Salisbury likely was just looking for some quick cash. Waddle left an established show, albeit in evenings, to come here. I think we all can live with him doing one show a week from somewhere else, can't we? Now if he's asleep at the switch on Bears stuff because he's watching his beloved Bengals or a bunch of other things, that's a different story. Regardless, Waddle and Silverman are light years ahead of their predecessors already and I'm listening to the station a lot more.

Shultzyy asks about our college football expert.

Any suggestions? I liked Danielson on the Big 10, but we went CBS/SEC on us last year. You wanna hear Musberger every Thursday or Friday? I wish college football were bigger. Illinois being a doormat hurts that... and this likely will be a rebuilding year in South Bend.

Darren in Tinley: John Clayton? Yes... Wednesdays again is the request. As for the hardest "Mr. Mom" thing I did while in penalty box.... I loved all of it. I always have enjoyed grocery stopping, probably because I remember not having much in the fridge during the Ball State years. I love grilling and enjoy entertaining. The most challenging thing was when Sheri and I took the boys to our favorite local hamburger joint. Patrick got upset when he ate a smokin' hot french fry. He's such a loving, harmless child and when I see him well up and try to hold it back because he hurts and he knows it's his own fault, it rips my heart out. Bad enough he's imprisoned by autism, one of the few things he ever asks for in this world is the food he likes. I overreacted and dropped a bomb at in front of the others, which embarrassed me. I took him for a short walk and he got over it. We had a great night. Patrick is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I'm learning from him.

Happy Hour Jason says "if you're gonna let the chips fall where they may, can we expect more suspensions?"

I sure hope not, HHJ. I think we all understand just how conscious we have to be regarding language, tone, offendability, etc. I can't make any promises, other than this one: I'll try hard not to put myself in that position. Would I bet on myself? Maybe only a place-and-show wager. I'm gonna try hard. Again.

FavreFan86 queries about my Walter Payton fallout.

Short answer: it was over his unwillingness to sign autographs at Score functions when he was on the payroll there. We did discuss it over the hone and reached some resolve, but I never saw Walter again. He got sick right afterward. I regret that, but I take heart in knowing Walt would go out to one of his antique cars (when he was withering away to nothing) to listen to Jiggetts and me to get his mind off his imminent death). He'd come in fired up. Connie told Jiggetts that at Walt's wake. I have no memory of ever having an issue with Connie Payton, as one of the posters suggested. We always have been friendly. Eddie Payton, Walter's brother, was a bit dickish at one of the golf outings (after Walter was gone) and I have given him a trimmin' a few times since. Maybe that was the confusion.

Spinnin' Bucket wants more on my Joakim Noah aversion.

I'm laughing, too, Nas. Yeah, lemme break down the game of the former Gator. Here's what I know: I hate the fist pumps and waving his arms and the facial expressions. Don't like the histrionics. Don't like how light he is. If he's willing to work hard in the gym, maybe he'll be a contributor, but I'm not knocked out.

The Wind Sock asks what I'll do after the radio thing is done.

I enjoy writing and I often have thought I'd be a decent senior level English teacher/JV football coach. I do not have a teaching certificate os of yet, however. I like taking care of people, too. Shopping. Cooking. Yard work. Having a choice "to work or not to work?" is an interesting concept. I enjoy fishing, golfing, travelling. Maybe I'll write about those.

Beardown remembers when I once said if I didn't agree with a suspension, I would quit.

Yeah, I said that. You cats don't miss much, do you? Sometimes maturity requires us to not be so full of machismo and realize others rely on you. And by the way, because of my company's stance on content and my increased level of understanding of it, I now have to admit the suspension was deserved.

What about Charles Davis from ABC's college football coverage? I seem to remember him being good on the radio and he follows the Big 10 pretty close.

Bob Davie or Bob Griese could be alright. I always enjoyed the college football talk on friday's.

Sounds like the perfect retirement for a menopausal homemaker. You are much too young to be thinking like this.

I hated him in South Bend, but Bob Davie has been excellent in the booth, and entertaining too - he'd be a good add. Too bad when he was coaching at Notre Dame the only Xs and Os he saw were in his morning Alphabits.

I love grocery shopping. If you are ever in the Minpls/St. Paul area, I highly suggest hitting a Byerly's if you have not done so.

You got it right. That is where I heard him. He was really good, and that is saying something with the interviewing style of B&B.

Davis is doing the main game along with Thom Brennaman for the new Big Ten Network, both on loan from Fox I believe.

I'm all for more regular college football talk. If the "Illini being a doormat" is contributing to the lack of their discussion, I will expect their resurgence this year to lead to 3-hour segments, song parodies, and the like.

"The Zook brings you back..." - with apologies to Blues Traveler and the rest of the world in general.

We had em in some NW suburbs in the mid 90's.
It was just like all the other grocery stores, but more expensive.

I'm a fan of Dan Plesac's breakdowns...

Stacey King got better, but I think he's still brutal.

Let's try this again:

With thanks to Killer V and Beardown for the questions, and Gridiron Ass for the original thought.

Then Jurko plays the role of the Chief in this version. He plays the role of deaf and dumb. He fooled the Cleveland Browns.

Browns - Is your knee healthy Jurko?

Jurko - (Blank stare.)

Browns - What the hell? You're fine. Sign here.

He fooled ESPN 1000 with that act too. They thought they'd hire the dumb jock. America loves the dumb jock. He plays deaf too because he repeats whatever Mac and Harry say right after they say it.

Mac - We're gonna put her in the basket Jurko. Hold those hands up high. Hit me Jurk!!! Hit me!!! I'm open.

Jurko - (Begins to chew on the ball)...

Mac - Want a cigar Jurko?

Jurko - Sure champ. The good kid would love a cigar. Thanks kid.

Mac - You son of a bitch. You fooled them Jurko. You really fooled them...

Jim Pastor
- Who wants to start the meeting?

Mac - I would. I was wondering if we could change the work detail so that we can start at 2pm and end at 6pm. I'm sure you don't know this but the Sox and the Cubs start at 7pm on most nights. Sometimes they start at 6pm. Me and the boys would like to be at home to enjoy the starts of these games.

Jim Pastor - We'll take it to a vote.

Mac - Yes!!! 3-0. We win.

Jim Pastor
- No. Not everybody voted.

Mac - What? You're counting Finji, Zetterman and the intern? They don't know where they are. They're crazed idiots.

Jim Pastor - They count.

Mac - Put your hand up Finji. Cmon Finji. Just raise your hand. Cmon. We can watch the start of the games. Cmon!!!!!

How about bringing Pully in for a hockey segment? :P

You guys might think I'm nuts but I think this is the year the Blackhawks start to matter again. Bill Wirtz is not in good health from what I was told yesterday and changes are coming.

I'll have to figure out how to transition back to a Hawks fan......

Well done Fixed Glee and Beardown. Top notch effort!

I don't think Mac is the cooperative/vegetative MacMurphy though. He still has the fire, but he's been reined in management and the threat of unpaid suspension. If he was bland/boring and toed the company line, he'd sound more like somebody who's been ESPNified - like Linda Cohn or Dan Patrick. Vanilla, politically correct and instead of being a 'real crowd pleaser' - he'd be an immediate button pusher.

Maybe Im in the minority here but i like the direction the show is headed, it seems like Mac has Harry back under control and the show has been pretty enjoyable since Mac has been back imo, the idea of straying from sports a little bit will work i think because its still done in an entertaining way, not done in a horrible, unlistenable way (i.e. North)

I don't really see much to respond to.
I listen to the show. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not so good. Being #1 for so long in the ratings may have gone to their heads a little and brought along with it the ESPN attitude of "we know better than you" and "we give you your opinion". There's certainly less listener and emailer interaction which may cause some of the staleness since we're left to listen to the opinions of the three hosts and not much else. It still provides me with entertainment and I'll continue to listen based on past performance and future potential... Of course if Mac's gone for the day and Harry's in, the radio will be off.

Seeing that the two dopes (B&B) who supposedly beat MJH in this ratings book hasn't had a post in their thread since Friday, ought to tell you the White Sox have scued the ratings and also tells you people could give a shit about B&B on this board.

The Sox don't play many day games in competition to MJH.

The lead in for East coast games which can start as early 5 or 5:30 and or 1:30 day games which counts for B&B ratings just as it did for the MJH show and being the Sox flagship gives you a lead in time of Sox fans . I would think Mac would tell you his ratings slipped a bit when the Sox moved to 670.

For the record Doomed B&B WERE "PRE-EMPTED" 37 times since the start of the spring book . That would give them a huge boost in the book.

Do your homework next time .

East coast games never start at 5 or 5:30. They are always 6pm starts. That's 7pm on the east coast. B&B are done at 6pm so those east coast games aren't a factor.

Every MLB team has 7pm local time starts except for weekends and get away days.

Nas , you are the straw that stirs the drink sometimes but if you want to spilt hairs and it sounds like you do , I'll break it down for you .

Seeing we did an ask "Mac" SEGMENT and he did not bother to answer the questions last time when only 67 replies and or questions were asked in that thread and now this time he got 87 replies to his ask Mac a questions thread.

My POINT IS you throw out a blanket statement like "His ratings must be down because his replies in a thread are down is as stupid as you posting your W2. Your better than that !!!!

You said the starts of games. Ok fine. Pregame.

Beleive me STU. The Ranger is taking nothing away from MJH. Nobody's tuning in for the awkward transition from Ranger to Farmio and Singlio. Or the Don Cooper daily interview. "We're getting there Ranger. The bullpen is almost there."

Mac, please explain or give these clown boxers a crash course in radio 101..

Go and back and read some interviews with the program directors on both stations about having the White Sox on before both shows and 'll once again prove my points.

Why didn't the Sox matter all of last year when MJH won and the Sox were a good 90 win team?

Now the Sox suck and they are the reason MJH are losing. Doesn't make sense.

You got an answer for that STU?

The ratings period for B&B last year during the Sox games closed the gap during the SPRING and Summer books last year as well and the 2 Pm STARTING TIME for B&B gives them an edge over MJH as well .Unitll the Sox arrivied at 670 B&B BARLEY HAD A HEARTBEAT.

Let me once again say that I was a fan of B&B and thought the last two shows at Bears camps were very good shows and they do get my ear but they did not gain that much ground overnite, nor has their show gotten any better and many"HERE" think Terry mails it IN have the time and he gets a heartbeat and wakes up when Bernstein is gone . I think at times they are great and other times, not so good.

My point to all of this is that everyone here wants to point fingers of why MJH has slipped and we have everything from Mac doesn't have enough posts in his ask Mac thread to Harry(1/3 of a very successful show for 4 years) is the cause for all that is wrong with the show. And again as Mac stated "One slip in a ratings book and it's the show sucks"? Come on ..

Just not buying it !!
