Doesn't make me uncomfortable, I say it all the time in non offensive settings and context. For instance, I might show up to work and take a look in the kitchen and then yell at the crowd of employees standing around, "which one of you ni##### took the last donut?"

(Kudos to anyone who can name that reference)

We seem to be arguing etymology and how it works, a topic that neither you or me probably know much about, and really shouldn't be wasting our time on it. I guess that is fairly common though.

That's absolutely true. But I think dolphin's point is that I can call him a Polack and it doesn't mean I hate Polish people.
Polack is like a lot of other words that portray certain stereotypes. There are words that are a different class that are specifically designed as a way to spread hatred about that race/religion/ethnicity.

Disagreed but I understand that your stance is the popular one at this point.

Is this a bit?

Obviously not

why? Do you consider how black people feel about asains, hispanics, etc using that word to be common knowledge?

Beverly Hills Cop??

Nope, very first scene in the very first episode of Reno 911. The main guy (gay guy) was lecturing the other cops about not making racist jokes anymore using the N word and the short black haired lady cop (forgot her name) was like, "well how do we know if something is racist, like is it racist if I say which one of you Ni***** took the last donut?"

Her name was Trudy. That show was hilarious.

From the Polish person with a thing or two to say about many matters that shouldn't be said/done.

Syndicated column from Royko circa 1978.

Not one black person wants to share their thoughts on this? Shit, this thread might as well be about Rock music, then.

What's to share that hasn't been shared already???

I find certain ethnic slurs funny. Including many about Blacks. But then again, I'm an odd mutt that's been confused for anything but Eastern Asian. Although, I guess I could pass for Samoan now :? . As a kid I was extremely fair skinned, especially in the dead of winter. Do I laugh when an actually funny comic uses them, yes. Is it difficult/conflicted, sometimes yes.

Would I use slurs in public, even joking around in mixed company as I did as a 21 year old, no. Do I mind when most of any race/ethnicity use them, yes. Do I believe in the theories behind "ownership of the N word" with Nigg@ or Ninja? Hell no. Can my sons listen to uncut versions of most rap music now, no. Do I read much of the rap lyrics posted around here now, no. It's now simply vulgar, not interesting and unfunny. But maybe I'm old :( .

Oddly, a PR parent on one of my sons' team just decided to have a FB exchange with friends where they decided to hit each other with the tag a number of times. I think less of him now. If he weren't at least Puerto Rican, I'd have had an exchange with him.

But, in simplest form, if you have to ask the question ("is it ok....), the answer is an equally simple no. No now, no a month ago and no three years ago when the Board was better (and a derivation of this question came up iirc).

I'm not an etymologist, but I would imagine it comes from Niger. I think BRick may be wrong in saying it was a word designed to hate. I don't think it took on its derogatory connotations until some time in the 1800s and the word is much older than that.
If you want to get technical, I'm sure the name derived from the river in Africa. That's just how words work though. Most of the time, there is some reason why those collections of letters showed up.

Right, but I'm saying I don't think it was invented as a slur. I would never call anyone "colored", but at one time that wasn't considered derogatory.

I kinda can't believe I read that.

Anyway, it is in fact from the word 'niger', but not the river ... it's Latin and it means black ... not unlike "negro" in Spanish.

Like I said, I'm not sure it's derived from hate. And anyway, I think the whole point of blacks using it is to take it back and own it themselves. Obviously, not everyone agrees with that concept. As I stated earlier in this thread, I have black friends that I grew up with who share your viewpoint. But they're old guys. I would suggest language and usage is mainly shaped by young people. I doubt many of us would use "gay" to mean happy these days.

No as chus posted (after I had posted and removed) the term refers to a place of origin. If a slave was captured from the Niger region of Africa, he was called a genius. it wasn't meant to be deragatory. it simply described hi/her place of origin. Obviously over time that changed. It is amazing what an emotional response can be elicited by using the word genius, whereas a black person calling me or probably most people, a cracker or honkey has no effect at all. Those people that allow the word to retain that power, give away that power in reality.

Pope Paul actually changed the way many people referred to Polish people. Polacks were made fun of commonly until Pope Paul . All of a sudden, telling Polish jokes wasn't funny. Basically the blonde joke style was used back years ago for Polacks. Why can't Polacks make Kool-Aid?? They can't figure out how to fit 6 pints of water in that little package....stuff like that. Amazing how it stopped for the most part when we got that Pope.

It was Pope John Paul II, dispshit, not one of the twenty plus Pope Paul's in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. You're like a racist Cliff Claven.
