With ace pitcher Mike Recchia now gone, it’s even more imperative that the Windy City ThunderBolts’ offense overcomes a slow start to the season.

Tuesday was another encouraging night for the T-Bolts, who swung the bats well again on their way to their third straight win.

Opening up a 15-game homestand, Windy City jumped to an 8-0 lead and went on to a 9-5 win over the Schaumburg Boomers at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood.

Recchia, a Crestwood native, was signed by the White Sox prior to the game after going 1-3 with a 3.69 ERA this season for the T-Bolts.

Last season, he went 11-3 with a 2.51 ERA and a league record 177 strikeouts and won the Brian Tollberg Award as the league’s top pitcher.

“I didn’t think this was going to happen and I tried not to think about it,” Recchia said. “I’m ecstatic.”

Windy City (8-15), which topped Rockford by scores of 15-6 and 5-4 on the road Saturday and Sunday, respectively, continued its offensive surge Tuesday.

“At the beginning of the season, we weren’t playing good baseball and it caught up to us,” T-Bolts left fielder Jeff Harkensee said after going 3-for-4. “Now we’re executing and putting the ball in play and it’s made a big difference.”

The T-Bolts wasted no time jumping on Schaumburg starter Mike Giovenco (1-3) as Ryan Soares (2-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI) led off the bottom of the first by blasting his first home run of the year over the left field wall.

Two walks later, Andrew Brauer (2-for-3) parked a two-run double into the left-center field gap for a 3-0 Windy City lead.

The hosts broke it wide open in the fourth, scoring four times off Giovenco on five hits. Brauer, Louis Templeton and Jeff Harkensee (3-for-4) all singled to set the stage for RBI base hits from Soares and Chad Cregar.

C.J. Gillman produced a run-scoring fielder’s choice and Mike Torres drove home a run with a sacrifice fly in the frame.

Harkensee doubled home Gillman (single) in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-0.

Windy City starter Daniel Cropper (2-1) was superb through five innings, but ran into all kinds of problems in the sixth as he walked two, hit a batter and surrendered two hits before being pulled with two outs in the frame.

Schaumburg (13-10) wound up scoring five times in the inning – all the runs were charged to Cropper – on just two hits as relievers Jessie Snodgrass and Tyler Claburn combined for two more walks and another hit by pitch before getting out of the inning with a three-run lead.

Zach Aakhus singled and came around to score thanks to an error and two wild pitches in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead back to four.

The T-Bolts filled Recchia’s roster spot by acquiring pitcher Rey Cotilla in a trade with Gateway for future considerations. Cotilla had a 6.75 ERA in six appearances with the Grizzlies.

You can't just look at the stats, Midget. There are many other factors to consider when evaluating minor leaguers the most important being age relative to league. At the start of the season Hawkins was the 2nd youngest player in High A while Carlos Sanchez was the youngest player in Triple A. They're both doing just fine.

The Sox also have a nice group of pitchers in the minors like starters Erik Johnson, Scott Snodgress and Chris Beck. They also have their usual group of power armed relievers in Santos Rodriguez, Jacob Petrika and Daniel Webb (he's throwing the hell out of the ball).

The Sox do a very good job of developing players to contribute at the major league level and this trend will continue for the foreseeable future.

Very good???? Name 1 really good positional player they developed. Not an okay guy like Viciedo, but a really good player. They don't have one.

The White Sox have promoted Erik Johnson to Triple-A Charlotte.

A second-round pick in 2011, Johnson had a 2.23 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over 14 starts at Double-A Birmingham. The 23-year-old right-hander could be an option for the major league rotation at some point this season
