You must not have went to Catholic High School then. Half the people at the games are alums.

I did not. Why would you want to spend your Friday night watching children that arent related to you play sports? I guess if a good friend had a kid playing I would go but other than that it seems creepy.

Why not hang out at the little league field to watch some baseball games?

My buddy coaches a LL baseball team. No kids on the team are related to him. His fiancee's son is on the squad. Need a ruling. Am I in the wrong for attending two playoff games last year to support said friend? They were damn good games. Side note: I drove my car and left the windowless van at home.

Really strange.

How many times have you listened to your favorite band? How many times have you seen them live?

I guess you don't love that band. You love cd's and mp3's.

There's a huge difference between live music and mp3s. And there are very few bands that I'd say I "loved" that played in my time that I haven't seen play.

I'm sure they have seen teams they "love" play live before. What's your point? Do you go see bands you like every single time they are somewhere in the area?

I usually like JORR's stuff, but I really don't know where he's going with this argument. By your logic, I have to shell out a few hundred dollars to prove that I love a sport by attending a game? I love NFL football. I have no use for any other form of football, be it HS, college, pee wee, etcetera.

Yes unless you attend EVERY game then you aren't a fan. Obviously.

Those emails are real. These are individuals who believe they are smarter than most people. And they feel a need to be heard because, damnit, what they think is fresh and original! They are likely over-educated for whatever current job they have (like Beerstain). You know, guys who like to tell people they read and enjoy James Joyce. They see Dan as a figurehead for the "smart" sports fan. All of the Bernstein parrots follow each other Twiiter. It's a club of sports misanthropes. You jerk me off, I'll give you a hand job. They watch sports but you get the sense there is no real enjoyment. So, they parrot what Dan says, or might say, and is it really hard to figure what his take on an issue might be if you have been listening regularly? Email or tweet is read on air, validation received, circle jerk continues.

McNeil: big fan. Abandoned the team years ago, which was hard, but that championship back in '10 really brought him back. Big Chief MacHawk. Good thing we have a guy like this steering the ship of one of our talk shows! What a fan.

His favorite team gets back to the Finals. He is doing a remote broadcast LITERALLY down the street from the stadium. A stadium he surely could have gotten into. He's a HUGE fan, not a poser, so surely he did what ANY fan (in that situation) would do and went to the game. I mean what an opportunity! No brainer. I mean, he used to have to settle for nosebleed seats in the rafters back when was screaming at Bannerman....now, he is right down the street with the ability to pull a press pass/sit in someone's suite based on his "status". Wait, what's that? He drove home to Indiana? Watched the game at home? Wait, this guy's a real fan. Surely with the circumstances he found himself in, he chose not to battle the potentially awful road conditions to.....wait, he did? He drove home. But he's a huge fan. Big Chief MacHawk. Is this thing on?

Harry, the guy PAID Bobby Hull to come to his house and hang out. If that doesn't make him a true fan than I don't know what does.

I may have it wrong but as I understand Mac never stopped loving or keeping an eye on the Hawks during his down period. He simply refused to go and put up with the crap that they were. In other words, he wasn't a Cubs fan.

Exactly. For fuck's sake, he resents the 90's Bulls for their mere existence, because they overshadowed the Hawks.

The point is most of them never see an NFL game. Liking football and liking TV aren't the same thing. That isn't a controversial stance, is it?

You don't have to prove anything. But isn't that post right there an admission that you are a fan of watching football on TV rather than actually being a fan of football? I don't care what you like. It's not my business nor my concern. My point is simply that there is a difference.

I consider myself a bigger fan because I like to watch at home. I can actually enjoy the sport and not worry about all the annoying bullshit at the game. It sounds to me like you are a fan of the event and not the sport.

What is the difference? We are both watching the same game, only if I'm at home I have more sight angles at my disposal. You may be in attendance, but we're watching the same game, the same players, the same scores, etc. Are you saying proximity is the defining factor that either makes you a fan of football or a fan of watching football on TV?

It isn't?

Is it some sort of different game on TV compared to watching it live? Different rules, perhaps?

Really?

I mean, it's the same game right? QB throwin' the ball, RB runnin' da ball....possibly a TE catching the ball, TD's count for 6, right?

Possibly you mean the experience is different?

Well, obviously the experience is different.

But if you read the posts of those insisting they are football fans, it really comes down to the fact that they are only fans of football in a very specific and limited way, i.e. watching the NFL from their couches. To me, that makes you a fan of a TV show rather than a fan of a sport.

I could argue that we are fans of the sport, and you are a fan of the event, much like the bleacher bums at Wrigley.

Let me ask this, if someone really was a fan of football, why would he or she find sitting in Wilmette watching St. Rita and Loyola go at it distasteful?

Unbelievable! I don't know anybody in my circle of friends or family (except for my brother) who is a bigger sports fan than me. Football was my first love and still is. I was blessed to see many Oilers' games (and at least 200 Astros' games-some of those at Wrigley) at The Astrodome. The team I love now is 1800ish miles away. They play in Indianapolis, an hour down the road, once a year, but (except for one ill advised purchase by my ex 10 years ago) I have never been able afford to buy a ticket/gas/parking/etc to see them play. I read everything I can...I listen to Houston sports talk radio online when I can...I participate in a Houston sports message board. How could I be a bigger fan??
And don't get me started about college games!!

Because they enjoy watching world class athletes. I mean, why aren't there big crowds at 3rd grade flag football games? Watching sports live or watching high school sports doesn't make one a purist. Its fine if they do, but it's certainly no better than watching a game on TV.
