Exactly! I'm glad I've reached a point in my life that I believe what others think about me is none of my business. Like me, hate me, be ambivalent. I don't fucking care. It gives me peace of mind.

I would say it is because I'm a fan of JORR's musical work and find his acceptance to be worthy of an attempt but as JORR would tell you, I never saw him live so I'm not really a fan of his at all.

Why would you want to spend your Sunday afternoon watching criminals that aren't related to you play sports? You seem to be saying there is some football you are not a fan of. Correct?

Because I enjoy professional sports played at the highest level...

I am also a fan of porn but I wont be watching a bunch of underage amateurs do that either

I think that's a fantastic choice!

Back to the Bernstein family, I really liked what I saw of Beth's page. She seems very interesting, and I love how she transitioned in life to the career she has now. And I loved her post about the game. Not forming an ALS though!!

I agree that the NFL in particular is a "made for TV" game. I'm not sure it's "best represented" that way though. Being at a live event is different. And the vast majority of people claiming to be NFL fans never see an NFL game in person. That makes them fans of a TV show. It's easy to turn on a TV. It's just as easy to turn it off.

What does being a fan mean? That you care about something? That you have an inordinate amount of interest in the subject? I don't know how you want to define being a fan of something. And anyway, I don't think there's any litmus test for being a fan. Do whatever you want. I'm just telling you how I see the vast majority of people claiming to be "big football fans". It really is about choices. Let's not go to an extreme example like your peasants in the Congo. Most people in this forum who would state that it's too difficult and expensive to go aren't destitute. They've just chosen to spend their money on other things. Football isn't that important to them. And flipping a switch on a TV is easy. I don't think that necessarily makes them less of a fan than the Hawks fan who has seen 2100 straight games in person, but it probably does.

well, i can't judge a person based on whether they watch the game at home or go to a game. and for me, who is a saints fan, going to a game is a major event. but even if i can't watch them on TV, i will follow the game online somehow. that's what being a fan is. time, emotion, effort, and passion. pretty simple formula.

the example of the hawks fan you mention reminds me of that superbowl commercial with the douchebag who brags about missing weddings to go to the superbowl. not to say that this fan is a douchebag but sometimes all that proves is that you can make it to these games, and you've probably sacrificed some other things. does that make you more of a fan? or more of an asshole? the world may never know.

Agreed. And when you get up on Sunday morning and do the same thing you did the night before- watch television- I don't think that displays any particular emotion, effort, or passion, do you?

JORR, recent graduate of the Dan Bernstein School Of Digging Your Heels In Institute, would like to invite you to participate in the following thread. Here he shows you how you can take a throwaway comment, realize it was dumb, then really dig in and double down with 100% pure cane condescension and pretend outrage over others not understanding your stupid point.

I'm not the slightest bit outraged, though it seems you may be. And you must be missing the irony in making a post like the one above and accusing anyone else of condescension.

Be a fan whatever way you want. I don't give a fuck. But if the extent of your emotion, effort, and passion is pressing a remote from your couch, perhaps you aren't really the fan you thought you were.

JORR, you really have made perhaps the most perplexing argument ever. After all of your posts, I still don't get it. You make the point that seeing in person is different than tv, which everyone agrees. But you fail to make any valid points beyond that.

Joe has me thinking and now I am really confused about something. I am a big fan of the Conan O'Brien Show. Now, it is a TV show, so if I go to a live taping of it does that make me more or less of a fan of the show?

I think I'm making a pretty clear point. I'm not sure why anyone is angry with my observation. Maybe it's because they feel as if it's an indictment of their own "fandom". Believe me, it isn't. I couldn't care less what anyone likes, loves, or hates.

I'm not angry at that, I'm angry one of my favorite posters has a horrible opinion like this. It's mind bottling (sic). It literally is something that is making no sense to me. I can't even wrap my head around your opinion enough to argue it because I don't understand it.

When it comes to being a fan is this correct?

Played the Sport > Attending games > watching on TV

Oh, I definitely sense some anger. Methinks some people are less than comfortable with their own commitment to the team. I can't tell you why that would be. Everyone is entitled to like whatever they like to whatever degree they choose.

But a word has to have a particular meaning. If it doesn't, we can't really use it to communicate. We have to agree on what "fan" means. The fact is, it's short for fanatic. What is a fanatic? Someone who watches TV? Maybe that's a television fanatic.

Again, I don't really care what anyone else likes or what they do. But people claim all kinds of stupid shit all the time. It's like, "I'm not racist, but..." before spouting some shit that definitely makes them seem to be very racist. So if you really think you're a football fan, you should ask yourself, if they passed a law that made it illegal to watch football on television, would I go seek football out, or would I just watch something else on television? For most people, I'm pretty sure I know the answer.

JORR, I'm generally a fan of your work, but you have it backwards. People are arguing with your premise. They don't care how you view their "fanhood." In fact, based on the conversation, it seems you are the only one concerned with labeling someone a fan or not a fan. I would venture a guess that most people here have never consciously thought about what it is to be a fan. You are the one who brought up this topic.

And your argument is wrong. Of course, we would have to first agree on what a "fan" is, but it certainly wouldn't be "someone who attends games live." Even if we took the literal meaning of the word "fanatic", that would most certainly not necessarily mean someone who attends games.

Let me ask you this question: is a corporate executive who attends games as a matter of business but couldn't name the starting lineup more of a fan than the teenager who looks forward to games for days or weeks and wears his favorite players' jersey while watching the game on television? This is rhetorical. We all know the answer. Being a "fan" is not defined by where or how you view the event.

Arguing you must have a played a sport to be a true fan is no more ridiculous that saying you must attend games to be a true fan.

I've never said you must attend a game to be a true fan. But I would assume a true fan would make an effort to see games live if in anyway possible. If you're a homeless guy collecting cans in an alley in a desperate but ultimately futile attempt to see your first Bears game, I have no doubt you're a true fan. But don't sit in your house with three big screens and take a vacation to Disney or the Bahamas every year and tell me you're the biggest fan in the world and would love to attend games but you just can't afford it. You're just making choices. You may be the world's biggest Disney fan. Or maybe your kids wanted to go to Disney and you're a fan of making your kids happy. There's nothing wrong with that. But it doesn't make you a fan of football.

I get exactly what JORR is saying about football as we digest it being more a TV show than a sporting event, and I agree.
