Who is worse:

People who go to (well not as much lately) Cubs games just to get loaded in the bleachers or those who watch football simply because of fantasy football or gambling?

I think football is unique in the sense that their are only 8 games a year and the tickets are not real easy to get.

I think if you're a baseball or basketball fan, you're going to go to a game each year at least.

Chads generally tend to be more reprehensible human beings in their daily lives, but at least they're out enjoying a nice summer day.

The NFL definitely lends itself more to splashy, high production value television than the other major sports. But some of this is owed to the relative scarcity of games.

You should try finding Indian Cricket Playoff tickets.

If you took away the bells and whistles of the production truck, the fantasy/gambling, and all the extraneous lifestyle bullshit peddled by beer/car/NFL.com commercials and just had a world where NFL telecasts consisted simply of showing fat guys headbutting each other while some guy runs ten feet and falls down, no one would really care about it because it's not terribly compelling. People would just like baseball, like they used to.

I guess someone understands my point.

If this was your point you should have just made it yourself....you didn't.

I agree with the premise that there really are a lot of people who are interested in the NFL for fantasy/gambling purposes and probably are more fans of a TV show than the actual sport. But to come on a sports talk message board and call out posters, who are obviously sports fans to begin with, and lump them into this demo is just plain dumb.

Admittedly, CH made it better than I did. He also took it a little further in an anti-footbsll vein than I would have. I feel the same way about as he does but I wasn't looking to criticize anyone else's favorite sport. And I certainly wasn't calling anyone out. In fact, I'm surprised so many people on a sports message board have such little interest in seeing their favorite game in person. They called themselves out.

that's the post of the year clubhouse leader right now.... but like, with live NFL football... idk, my live game experience (~5-8 games from 09-11) i was sniping cheap single tickets on stubhub and just going for the visceral release of being in a crowd of bears fans and all that.... i'm not gonna say that TV is fundamentally better than live football, cuz even in the worst seats of soldier field (and i've sat in the absolute corners of that place) you get more of an idea of what's going on and you can watch plays happen from a coach's film view and all that.....

but yeah, i'm an oddity as i dont wanna drink-at/smoke-b4 games and whatnot, and i always keep my radio on one ear to stay informed and i'm 15% worried about my fantasy teams and whatnot, so i'm the minority.... for the majority tho, yeah, they're better suited to go bernstein and just drink at home cuz it costs a bunch of money and thus it's needless vanity and you're always safer being drunk at home. shomer shabbos.

Youre right about all the program/production excess that goes into a NFL telecast, not to mention mostly inarticulate, doofuses that do pregame and halftime "analysis," but i personally avoid all that trash and just tune in at kickoff. All I need is the game, and if I want an analytical breakdown, I'll seek out some noted writers for that, or even log in here. I don't need a guy like Ron Jaworski taking five minutes to say winning comes down to which team scores more points, or Terry Bradshaw telling me a RB's leg injury will likely impact his running ability. My point is all the fluff you rightly pointed out is not necessarily consumed by everyone watching the game on TV. It's often ignored.

Do you know what you get when people watch a sport on TV simply for the sake of enjoying the sport, without paying mind to cultural pressure, recreational gambling, or rampant televisual gimmickry? The NHL.

i woulda said soccer, but that's only cuz i leave the gambling to all of the european people who take up that creepy guy on the bet365.com commercials that always end up being the first or second commercial at halftime on UK broadcasts.

but yeah, canadian stick soccer counts too =D

So, people choose not to attend the best way to get a "communal" experience, and instead stay at home, because they want communal television? Um, what? I want to hang out with people! I want to do it so much that I'm going to sit at home and watch television!

You are aware that the NFL's best ratings happen late on Sunday night? Do you really think most people are watching with other people who aren't immediate family at 10pm on Sunday Night?

This whole thing is dumb. It's basically people listing why football is so much fun, and then saying people only like football because of all the reasons it is fun. You can do the same thing for any other sport though none of them reach the same level.

Yeah, because the ratings really go down a lot in week 17 and the playoffs.

Heck, NFL preseason games get massive ratings on NBC.

I can list 5 reason why people like baseball, or basketball, or hockey. The fact that a sport has something good about it can't be used to say "Well, people only like it because of this, and this, and this, and this".

There are tons of fantasy leagues that go into week 17 and the playoffs.

Anyway, youre "none of them reach the same level" is what's incorrect.

Fine. What about preseason? Let me guess, people are scouting for the draft. What about the NFL draft? Oh that's right, fantasy, or communal viewing, or something. What about the pro bowl?

The NFL is by far the most popular league in this country. Do you disagree? My point was if I take the 5 best things about baseball, or basketball, or hockey and say that those sports are only watched because of those things then I can but none of them reach the same level that the NFL does.

No, it really has nothing to do with that though Rick wants it to. It's about people claiming to be fans who never actually see any games. Regardless of what sport. I think its much more common with football, particularly the NFL.

JORR, what about the scarcity of NFL games?

That matters.

If there were 81 Bears home games a year, many more people would go

I watch the vast majority of football games by myself. Given the disposable income, I would attend every Bears game both home and away. Sadly that isnt an option. If I get to one game a year I consider that pretty good.

Ok. Cuz CH's rant seems to boil down to he simply prefers baseball over football. I don't think he actually made any valid points really.

The funny part to me is that CH's rant seems to go as much against JORR's thoughts as any of mine because nothing CH said indicates football being the easy way out with all the massive parties that CH is describing.

So, to summarize...

Football sucks because it has a large fantasy and gambling component, has advertising/promos during the game, and a lot of the fans watch the games at home because they can't get tickets/prefer to stay home on Sundays/hate huge, drunk crowds/can't take the kids for fear of civil commotion/can't see from the 1708708th row/don't want to listen to their wife bitch/don't want to get t-boned on Lake Shore Drive/hate loud, Italian women/don't want to pay 50 dollars for a broiled sausage. Got it. Fucking lazy asses.

Just got an email informing me that I wasn't selected for Masters tickets. Looks like I'll only get to be a fan of the TV show next April...once again. I'm so pissed because I really want to be a fan of the tournament instead. :(

Just got an email informing me that I wasn't selected for Masters tickets. Looks like I'll only get to be a fan of the TV show next April...once again. I'm so pissed because I really want to be a fan of the tournament instead. :(

Why were you trying to get tickets? Isn't golf better on TV?

Because I've learned in the thread that I'm not a "real fan" unless I watch it live. I really want to be a fan of the Masters Tournament, not just a TV show.
