SPOILERS BELOW, I think

I really really liked it. I thought Cavill was a fantastic Superman and was even better as Clark. The way they intertwined his childhood was really appealing to me as well. I can see how some people won't be a fan of how sci-fi-ish it is, but I was a fan of them going with Zod instead of Lex. The scenes in Krypton were amazing.

There was some bad though. I did not at all like how much destruction there was. Visually, yea, it was kick ass, but Superman is supposed to have that inner urge to save people, and instead he's throwing Zod through buildings that seemingly have people in them (take him to the corn fields!!). And you can only assume tens of thousands of people die with all the buildings collapse... so did Superman REALLY "save" them? That was a gutsy twist. As was killing Zod. I get that he had to do it to save that family but he is not supposed to kill people. And again, he's not torn over saving a single family when dozens of skyscrapers full of people just went down? That part irked me.

All in all, I came away satisfied. I do think it's the best Superman. And with the Wayne Enterprise easter eggs, hopefully we are moving closer to a Justice League movie!

I don't think it's right to not have a dark or brown haired lady play Lois Lane.

The other thing that I didn't pick up on until a moment of online research is that Amy Adams is 38 years old. Lois Lane in the 1978 movie was 30 years old at the time of the first movie. If there is a redhead in a Superman movie it's Lana Lang. In the original movies she did not appear until Superman III.

That's kinda what I always thought. Too overpowered. Always just a laser eye blast or super punch away from victory.

Wouldn't Emma Stone be a better, younger, hotter choice to play Lois?

Lazy writing. Any time he needed to defeat someone they just added a new power and any time they needed a quick way to defeat him they through some kryptonite at him. Boring and lame.

In the beginning he was just a super charged human being, right? Super strength, speed and endurance?

It does kinda make it lame, unless he's fighting Black Adam or some other magical being.

From Wikipedia so take that as it is... Lazy and boring.

As an influential archetype of the superhero genre, Superman possesses extraordinary powers, with the character traditionally described as "faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound", a phrase coined by Jay Morton and first used in the Superman radio serials and Max Fleischer animated shorts of the 1940s[111] as well as the TV series of the 1950s. For most of his existence, Superman's famous arsenal of powers has included flight, super-strength, invulnerability to non-magical attacks, super-speed, vision powers (including x-ray, heat-emitting, telescopic, infra-red, and microscopic vision), super-hearing, super-intelligence, and super-breath, which enables him to blow out air at freezing temperatures, as well as exert the propulsive force of high-speed winds.[112]

As originally conceived and presented in his early stories, Superman's powers were relatively limited, consisting of superhuman strength that allowed him to lift a car over his head, run at amazing speeds and leap one-eighth of a mile, as well as an incredibly dense body structure that could be pierced by nothing less than an exploding artillery shell.[112] Siegel and Shuster compared his strength and leaping abilities to an ant and a grasshopper.[113] When making the Superman cartoons in the early 1940s, the Fleischer Brothers found it difficult to keep animating him leaping and requested to DC to change his ability to flying; this was an especially convenient concept for short films, which would have otherwise had to waste precious running time moving earthbound Clark Kent from place to place.[114] Writers gradually increased his powers to larger extents during the Silver Age, in which Superman could fly to other worlds and galaxies and even across universes with relative ease.[112] He would often fly across the solar system to stop meteors from hitting the Earth, or sometimes just to clear his head. Writers found it increasingly difficult to write Superman stories in which the character was believably challenged,[115] so DC made a series of attempts to rein the character in. The most significant attempt, John Byrne's 1986 rewrite, established several hard limits on his abilities: he barely survives a nuclear blast, and his space flights are limited by how long he can hold his breath.[116] Superman's power levels have again increased since then, with Superman currently possessing enough strength to hurl mountains, withstand nuclear blasts with ease, fly into the sun unharmed, and survive in the vacuum of outer space without oxygen.

The story of superman isn't when or what power to use. It is the development of self control to use the power wisely and his struggles to assimilate while simultaneously being both hero and outcast. The superpowers are for show. The story is of internal struggle.

finally saw it today.

The father/son dynamic is a very strong theme and the reason is simple...because it's so obvious that superman has always been a creationist/spiritual story. krypton represents whatever there was before let there be light, jor-el is god, and kal-el is jesus. the idea that superman is "not of this world" isn't to show off what a badass he is. it's to illustrate that he doesn't connect or fit in here. his strengths and powers are seen as possible threats. his internal struggle is to find out what his purpose is. his father's wish is for him to save all of mankind.

that payoff is somewhat missing in an extraordinarily bombastic conundrum of a film. on the one hand it wants to be a self portrait of a christlike superbeing that doesn't know what to do with himself. and there's a pivotal moment between him and his earth father to do what's right versus do what he wants to do in his heart. then, it wants to be an action packed sci-fi yarn. it never really connects the two, it feels like it's 2 movies packed into one very small sardine can. and so we ultimately we have a clunky 3rd act that never seems to end.

this film also suffers from the "mini-boss syndrome". we don't need to see the henchmen fights long and drawn out. we know they're not going to pose a real threat.

and i agree with BC that there was a lot of hypocrisy on the part of superman to destroy a lot of what he's supposed to protect. sure it looks great but it's almost like they let michael bay in the editing room at the last minute.

when the film is patient and quiet, it's very nice. i really like the acting in the film. when it's trying to be "iron man" meets "thor" meets "the incredible hulk", it clangs and clangs...and the action is so standard and garden variety that it doesn't impress.

i wish the filmmakers would've chosen the former rather than the latter. it had the potential to be the best superman film ever made because some of it really captured what makes superman such a compelling story. it's not about his super powers. it's about him saving us from ourselves because we don't understand ourselves. he saves the world so we don't have to.

oh...and enough with the zoom shots. holy shit is that old and tired.

While I do think special effects have come a long way since the Christopher Reeve movies, I feel like special effects are a major distraction in these remakes. When special effects are overdone they become so clearly fake.

You didn't even mention that he begins his work as superman at age 33

It's hard to get a good job directly out of college. He probably spent at least 5 years as a barista and waiter.

I mention that as further evidence that the movie is equating superman to jesus who was similarly rejected by the aristocracy at the same age (at least by tradition)

Maybe he could fly and the guys writing the bible were like 'C'mon Hezekiah, we already talk about him walking on water and healing blind people. No way are they gonna buy that he could fly too. Let's try to keep this somewhat reasonable or people 2000 years from now are going to think we are crazy.'

Great point. Same could be said for Jesus' red underwear, probably.
