I don't think 1 year ahead or behind really effects a kid. 2 years definitely can and does.

I didn't meant to take a shot at your brother by the way, it is the practice in general that I don't like and there needs to be something done to stop it, but there really is no way.

Not as extreme as repeating 8th grade, but my neighbors waited a year to start their 2 sons in kindergarten. They both have "in between" birthdays, so instead of being one of the youngest in their classes growing up, they waited the year and now are one of the oldest. My neighbors told me it was for sports. Not necessarily thinking it will help them become pros, but just for the advantage of being older than everyone else.
