If you're getting paid to write columns, you shouldn't make those sorts of mistakes.

Ok. I dig that. I was kidding about the judging my grammar part.
I'm sure it's lousy. I don't actually ever remember learning what a phrasal adjective is.
But I wasn't an english major.

Not entirely relevant to the discussion here, but I did want to kind of complicate a connection I see here and in other threads between Dan's education and his supposed commentary for the thinking fan. His background in English does not and should not give his views on racism, biology, heterosexual normativity, comparative theology, etc., any more weight than we would give a career street vendor's comments about rocket science and politics. Duke is a great school, but English majors don't simultaneously undergo any kind of rigorous and sustained training in the subjects he so forcefully and pedantically engages. I doubt his time in Rockford doing play by play exposed him to that kind of stuff as well. In other words, the views rightfully criticized here and in other threads are not the profoundly nuanced views of an educated man; they are simply the views of hyperbolic, sanctimonious, elitist asshole who happens to spit into a microphone.

By the way, just to be precise, Duke is technically not an ivy league school. This doesn't make it any less of a school, nor has anyone here mentioned Duke being an ivy league school, but I just wanted to point this out. It's not like the general perception of Bernstein's intellectualism needs to be any more inflated than it already is.

Thanks. I am also a big fan of vegan, except for his views on chicken strips, as he already knows.

Good points. I always saw through this meme that Dan is any more intelligent than anyone else. I think he uses his Duke English degree and NY Times puzzles to have a proper way of speaking and a good vocabulary. Really what he must have done is simply take some advanced debate courses and really knows how to use those tools.

Does not make him correct though 8)

ALSO: I wasn't listening so I can't really do a hypocrisy callout here, but was Laurence in full agreement with Bernstein on the singular importance of championship seasons? Because I know that's 180 degrees against his former stance; he did an entire show years ago comparing sports fandom to chasing skirts and how much better the hunt is than the capture ifyouknowwhatI'msayin'.

That's a pretty dumb analogy unless he meant that in the context of a team winning so many championships that you can barely work up a half chub when they inevitably reach the playoffs.

Especially when you consider the fact that he wields the English language with all the subtlety and mastery of a guy lugging a toilet up a flight of stairs.

I do not like it at all. I just think it is a tool he has learned/used to in his mind win his point.

 I rarely listen to Waddle, but when I do, I get the feeling he would have been a great plantation owner in the antebellum South. He has a certain noblesse oblige.

I don't believe most people here view Bernstein as a mouthpiece for the thinking fan, especially since the reaction to his views is largely negative. Rather, they see him as someone who has flaunted his pedigree to maintain an authoritative position within the Chicago sports radio landscape. I would also add that he has mastered the craft of forwarding "complicated" (if turgid or downright incoherent) analyses to promulgate the view that his particular brand of thinking is superior to rival schools of thought, particularly the "meatball" approach to understanding sports. The influence of his ability to dramatize and popularize the act of "complicated analysis" is visible in the way his acolytes--most obviously Holmes, drinky, and Goff--mimic his conceptual approach to sports talk radio.
