No. Because honestly, the experience of going to the games was never all that enjoyable for me. It had nothing to do with being a fan of the team.

You really don't enjoy watching your team with others who are as into as you are? That doesn't seem much different than the way bernstein suggests is the correct way to watch.

Again, I don't care how anyone chooses to watch, but there has to be some definition of a fan. Is it a guy who buys a t-shirt? If the Bears are up against the Dancing With The Stars finale and you stick with Tom Bergeron, are you really a big Bears fan? I don't really know the answer, but to me, the word "fan" connotes more than ordinary interest in something.

I watched with others but I'd rather watch at a bar or at somebody's house. That gathering isn't good enough?

I made lifestyle changes. I posted online, I bought material object related to the Bears. I had social interaction with others, strangers even, at bars. I attended camps. I sought out info relating to the team, I cheered, I booed. I defended them and chided other teams fans. That's not enough?

There aren't any rules, but there has to be a definition of "fan" and I don't think "casually interested" is it. I guess I would say that if you care, you're a fan. But I would think someone who cares is interested in seeing the team he/she cares about live once in awhile.

If no one comes to see a team, it may as well not have any fans. Because it will quickly be out of business.

As long as the same time is spent watching them why does it matter?

If I've watched every Bears game on television the past 10 years and someone has watched every Bears game in person what do they gain over me?

You can do whatever you want. But I would suggest there is a big difference between watching at home with your friends and being there. If you and Frank and your wives watch a Bears game together, yeah, you're all Bears fans. But the Bears aren't really the thing tying you all together. Your relationships go beyond that. There's something about sharing joy with a guy you might otherwise hate solely because of the experience of being there when A.J. hits a ninth inning homer to beat the Dodgers.

My point isn't that there's a necessity for a fan to see games live. It's that a fan wants to see games live. We all have limitations, but if you have no interest in seeing games live, I'm not sure you're much of a fan.

If you never go to a game, you are relying on others who do. Now, you may tell me that the monolith that is the NFL would just operate as a studio television program, and maybe it could. But I would suggest that playing in front of empty stands would destroy the game. We have a real life example of that currently with horse racing. More people bet than ever. More money is bet than ever. But every guy is betting from his computer or at a far flung OTB and the stands at racetracks are empty. The sport is dying a slow death. Who wants to own a horse and win a big race with nobody there? The same goes for anything. If you watch on TV, you're counting on someone else to buy the tickets.

I would love to see my NFL and MLB teams in person for every one of their games, but it's just not financially feasible, considered they're located in DC and Stl, respectively. JORR is off his rocker on this one.

I don't know. It seems like you're trying to set up some rules. There are no rules. If you're a fan you know you're a fan. It doesn't matter what anyone else says. But certainly a fan wants to see his team in person when he can, no?

If you have every Huey Lewis album, I'd say you're a fan. If you take an evening and spend $100 to see Huey Lewis thirty years after his prime, you're definitely a fan. If the extent of your interest in Huey Lewis is doing the shimmy in your car when "I Need A New Drug" comes on the radio, you're probably just a guy who likes a song. But maybe you're a fan.

You're the one who said once in a while. I simply was asking what your definition of that was. I would agree that a fan should want to see his team in person. Then again, I've had plenty of experiences at sporting events and concerts over the years that have made me not really give a shit if I don't go anymore.
