I need non animated suggestions appropriate for an 8 & 5 year old. I'll probably buy them so I don't want them to suck. The only one I can think of is ET.

I can't wait to come back in a few hours and read the many pages of serious, helpful suggestions that are sure to be offered here!

I don't think this wouldn't be appropriate for the ages listed. I know they don't show the fatal attack, but still. Could be a bit much for young kids.

Uncomfortable enough that I flipped the channel to avoid any questions from my 3yr old.

Before anyone judges me, the kid loves ghosts. Thinks they are funny not scary... Yet let a ladybug or ant crawl on him and you would think he was being murdered.

Some old-time kids movies that I think are fantastic:

Jules Verne's Mysterious Island (1961), probably my stone-cold favorite film from the ages of 6-11. It's about a bunch of Union POW's who escape from a Confederacy prison via hot air balloon. Stormy weather carries them to a distant tropical island where they encounter all kinds of strange creatures, pirates, etc. Eventually they also discover the genius inventor Captain Nemo, whose sub they use to escape from a volcanic eruption that threatens the island. They really don't make glorious high-spirited adventure films like this any more. It's fantastic.

In a somewhat similar vein, the 1938 adaptation of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and the 1950 version of Stevenson's Treasure Island were also some of my favorites as a kid. Both are great.

Some of the Disney live-action films from the 1960s-1970s are also fun. As a kid, I remember liking some of the Kurt Russell stuff like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Strongest Man in the World and Now You See Him, Now You Don't. There are a bunch of other movies like the Absent-Minded Professor (1961 only), the Shaggy D.A. and the Apple Dumpling Gang that are rightly quite popular. All of these selections are great, fun kids movies that are part comedy, part mystery, part adventure. Again, they don't make them like that any more.

Is your daughter familiar with the Anne of Green Gables books? She'll love the movies. Actually, your son might, too, although he's a bit young for them. They're incredibly well done.

I imagine they've probably worn through a couple copies of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) already. If not, that's always a winner. Never heard of a kid who didn't like it. Another great mixture of adventure, mystery and comedy that seems unique to the 1960s-1970s.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, starring Don Knotts in all his glory.

I also used to love the Japanese monster movies (Godzilla, Mothra, etc) as a kid. They were always on cable.

James and the Giant Peach is the best kids movie of all time, but it's like 70% animated.

The original Adventures of Robin Hood (1938, starring Errol Flynn) is a great movie for kids and adults.

this has become a Tall Midget thread.

Gotta agree on the Apple Dumpling Gang. Great move. Also 20000 Leagues under the Sea with Kirk Douglas.
