Berstein's flawed logic over such sensitive/political correct issues are moot.

Loved his defense of homosexuality after NBA veteran Jason Collins came out. Unfortunately, Bernstein loses credibility in fighting the argument for his allowing homosexuality to still be used as a comedic prop on his show (i.e. sound bites, vague references, etc.). Similar to how they still use the Forest Gump kid's noise sound bite (used whenever they deem something as being stupid or "retarded").

I thought the Forest Gump kid noise was mainly used when referring to the ol' in out in out.

I always thought it was Boers talking.

Sure, I agree with everything here, which is why I tried to be as general as possible in my post because I know most of us don't see him as a mouthpiece for the thinking fan.

Not that you're doing this, but as another general observation, I would caution against throwing the baby out with the bathwater here because much of what Dan wants to label as the "correct" way of a fan should behave is in fact the way many fans behave during/after games, etc. The difference is Dan is being unnecessarily absolutist about this and drawing lines in the sand between the meatballs and the refined fans. Extending the allegory you forwarded earlier, I wonder if Dan's zealousness about proper fans reflects a psychological mechanism by which he justifies to himself and his educated, wealthy network of friends his chosen line of work. In palling around with doctors and other white-collar professionals, I wonder if Dan is trying to characterize sports/sports commentary in ways more palatable to bourgeoisie ways of thinking and being.

I've given this consideration before, and I don't think so. It's certainly possible, but I think it's more complicated than that. To me, it's more nature than nurture. Dan has a personality which lends itself to what he deems "logical" behavior and thought, and he grew up in surroundings which probably deem sports to be unimportant pastimes which are worth discussing in casual conversation but not lending one's identity to. He found sports to be a worthwhile outlet as a youth, however, as evidenced by his conversation with Harry Caray. Still, he had to work his way through the ranks as a play-by-play guy in Rockford, Illinois. This cultural experience was likely shocking to a Deerfield-raised, Duke-educated English major. He felt as though he had been enlightened, and his goal from that point forward was not only to be a "real" journalist but to educate the masses regarding how "real" people and professionals viewed sports. He didn't realize that he wasn't the first to view sports as a pastime, but that socio-economic forces caused lower income communities to rely on sports as their main source of entertainment and comradery, and thus, their identity. Since then, his views may have swayed, but he created his identity when he started his show, and he has maintained it ever since. To change now would be impossible.

Why do you think he feels that a bunch of rich guys at the United Center being entertained by Pippen and Jordan is so far removed from (and superior to) a bunch of Texas ranch hands and oil workers in a stadium being entertained by the local high school team? if anything the Texans have a closer connection and a more vested rooting interest.

This is certainly plausible. Irrespective of Bernstein's intellectual origins, I guess we can all agree that he's unfortunately become an insufferable blowhard.

Does not make him correct though 8)

Sure, and another way to expand one's vocabulary is simply study for the GRE, which he may have done if he ever considered going to grad school.

I'm not so sure about his debating skills though; we're really deprived of an actual debate on Bernstein talking points because Boers is not interested at all in challenging him. So the "debate" is really a Bernstein monologue a particularly polarizing topic, and then him condescendingly shouting down callers who disagree with him. Rare is the counterpoint that is not drowned out by Bernstein's affected fury. Bernstein's points are perfunctorily reinforced by Boers, which gives the impression a really original point has been made that cuts against the grain of supposed meatball orthodoxy.

It's really quite easy to be a radio tough guy. You just shout over the caller or hang up on him whenever you want. Or you assemble your own micro-mob on Twitter and block anyone who challenges you.

bernstein did not fare well in the level playing field of the message board forum where Tall Midget made him run away with his tail between his legs.

Did Bernstein register as Dan Bernstein? I tried looking up that username's posts but nothing came up. I think the system said he had like nine posts. Does anyone know where I can find the Bernstein-Tall Midget discussion?

A lot of it he said he couldn't answer because of CBS policies or something.

I think this "level playing field" stuff is ridiculous.

Guys like Bernstein, Spiegel, Mully could show up on here tomorrow and they would win over next to none of their detractors. In fact I'd imagine it would only make things worse.

That's because their detractors are correct. The "level playing field" is a forum where one party does not have the built-in advantage and the ability to steamroll the other party. dan couldn't shout down Tall Midget so he ran away like a bitch. Not uncommon. Rongey and drinky ran away too. Mac is the only one with the balls to take on the likes of a Gloopan on a neutral court. That's why I would never call a show: Too much advantage, your dojo. Hell, I never really liked Mac until I discovered this board and the fact that he was willing to engage his listeners on equal terms. No matter what stupid shit he might say, I'll always like him and respect him for that alone.
