They need to trade Deng. It's that simple. They NEED to. He is clearly worth more to another team than he will be to the Bulls. Get something this year for him.

If true, this is ridiculous. I know some will disagree, but the Noah-Deng-Boozer-Rose core is simply not good enough to win a championship. They will lose four out of seven against the Heat, Thunder, and SA every time. Management should construct a team that has enough to beat teams led by multiple stars. This team is too reliant on Rose, and Deng is severely miscast as Rose's right hand man.

I wouldn't offer him an extension until next summer UNLESS he were willing to take about $8M a year.

Like the Washington trade rumors for instance. It was mentioned several times in national articles that there's no way the Wizards would do it knowing that Deng had only one year left on his contract and probably wouldn't re-sign with them.

Isn't there a rule against that kind of strategy though? I know there's a sign and trade option, but isn't there something else that would prevent a team from doing what you're implying? Didn't this happen with Brook Lopez? I remember the Nets being unable to trade him for like three months or something after they signed him to an extension. That basically killed any chance of him being traded for Howard, which is why the Nets waited so long to extend Lopez.

If the Bulls aren't willing to cut their losses with Carlos Boozer until a year from now, let alone consider trade offers for Joakim Noah, Luol Deng is the one guy who the Bulls might have to part with if it means Uncle Jerry Reinsdorf gets out of the luxury tax threshold.

While there is some money coming off the Bulls' books this summer with Richard "Rip" Hamilton, as well as Nazr Mohammed, Nate Robinson & possibly even Marco Belinelli all very likely not coming back, the Bulls would be wise to listen to all offers for Deng. That said, this rumored deal with the Wizards, journeyman Emeka Okafor & the #3 overall pick isn't quite what gets Deng out of town.

If the Bulls give Deng an extension, they are basically closing their own title window, which was very small to begin with. Deng coming off the books next year plus the impending amensty of Boozer after next season was what was going to give the Bulls great flexibility cap-wise in the future. Now that is all going to be gone. Smart move Gar-Pax. If they want to re-sign him next year after striking out on other free agents, that's fine, but this extension move makes zero sense to me.

deng is an apropos mascot for this iteration of the super/try-hard-bulls. they'll win their ~50-60 games, make some noise for a playoff series or 2, and then they'll bow out when the BIG. BOY. BASKETBALLERS. do their thing come hardware time. since the bulls are content with having ~17k/game there and having "tough" playoff losses, extending him means that we'll have the status quo of NBA hell for as long as he's around. and we'll have his bum wrist too.

Great post, Sini.

And let's see how many star free agents they'll sign if and when they clear out cap space.

What free agents will the Bulls sign next year? They're not going to be available. Making a trade will be the only way they land another star. They have the assets.

Exactly. They need to be on the phone with the Thunder ASAP.

I didn't mean next year. I think 2016 is the year I've heard that the Bulls will try again to land their 1st star free agent. I'm just getting tired of hearing about process. Lots of hype for something that never materializes.

I'm all for a trade, Nas. Because it's apparent something's up with guys not wanting the Bullls money.

I'm not really informed about much at all really, but this sort of makes sense. You let Deng walk away for nothing? That doesn't sound like a good idea. I would imagine he would re-sign here for less than he makes now, yet more than anyone else would give him.

Wouldn't he be more attractive to teams if his deal is expiring? He is an injury prone defender that makes decent money. I would think a team would want to squeeze one year out of him n free up alot of $.

@KEEPlNGSCORE Depends on the terms of the extension. For more info, see this portion of @LarryCoon's salary cap FAQ: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q92

Thanks, man. This is great stuff. Will have to set aside some time to read and think about this section, and other parts that might be relevant.

Aldridge reportedly wants to be traded to the Bulls and Deng is supposed to be involved. Does that mean Boozer gets the axe a year early? What happens to Gibson?

Gibson would have to be moved. That's too much to pay a backup annually, plus I have to imagine he at least wants a shot at starting before he's 30.

I would make a deal that doesn't involve Noah and obviously Rose but that would really shake up the Bulls roster and he's not a good rebounder or defender.

He's a fine defender and an acceptable rebounder considering we all ready have Noah.

I would hate to lose Deng and Gibson. I love their fearlessness and effort. They're easy to root for.

It's hard to be fearless and passive at the same time, but Luol Deng does somehow accomplish it. I'll give him that.

Okay. What's your thought about kicking the tires on Pau Gasol?

I just don't know how many more good years a 32 year old Pau Gasol is gonna give you, but if all you're giving up is Deng + contract-matching pieces, I'd say yes.

The Lakers aren't going to move Gasol after Howard opts for H ouston or clippers. And I believe Gasol makes 19 ish million .

Gasol would be expiring after next season, so it wouldn't be burdensome.

Deng + Trade exception from Korver deal
for
Gasol

BOOM!

I don't think the Bulls can trade for a PF this offseason because Boozer and Gibson's contracts would be a problem.

No I agree Gasol for a year is great, then 20 million off the books. I just don't see l.a. getting Howard then moving Gasol. The Lakers will have over 40 mill off the books this time next year when Kobe n Gasol are gone..they can rebuild that whole team.

I agree with all those points. They should trade him. If they give him an extension, I'm going to personally give GarPax a spinal tap with my wang. I would rather him walk away for nothing at the end of next season, than give him an extension. The money devoted to his contract could be spent on something else.

I really hope the Bulls don't listen to any of you and trade Deng just for the sake of trading him. He's going to finally rest his body this summer and will come back at the peak of his game in a contract year. That in addition to Butler will give the Bulls 2 of the best perimeter defenders in the league. That will help when they dethrone Miami. The Bulls should stay patient unless they get a great offer. Dumping Deng would be stupid.
