Not sure if you guys are into anime, but anything by Hayao Miyazaki is very good.

Top 5 Hayao Miyazaki films for kids:

Spirited Away
Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind
Ponyo
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service

Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke are both good too

I always liked Cloak and Dagger as a kids movie but not sure the 5yr old would be able to follow it.
The Goonies was on the other day and I watched the last 20 minutes. That one stands up well over
the years. I'd agree with TM with the Apple Dumpling Gang movies and then there was another one
by Disney called The Worlds Greatest Athlete that I remember enjoying.

she was asking for non-animated movies, which is the only reason why this got to even 2 pages without me suggesting miyazaki. his films are some of the best animated films ever made, especially "spirited away".

good taste, mud!

Second the Spy Kids movies. My 5 year old can't get enough of them. Also Goonies (has some language that was acceptable for PG back then but not now) and Apple Dumpling Gang and Escape from Witch Mountain.

Bingo. Miyazaki is the best. Great movies. We have not seen Nausicaa. Have to check that out. Totoro and The Cat Returns are also wonderful kids movies.

Good suggestions, thanks!

I don't know if I don't understand anime but spirited away was not for me (us). The beginning was okay but the end lacked impact and the middle was often boring and down right weird at times. I also think some of the ethic stereotypes were for lack of a better word offensive. I just don't like that stuff in kids movies if not done with some care. The giant headed lady was not really a good villain, I thought she was weird and creepy as was the concept of bath house slaves. My kids were bored and confused at times. There wasn't really a plot to follow just messages. We might be stupid or uncultured because I think we are the only ones that didn't care for it.

Not at all. I could see these movies not being for everyone. We do think they are awesome but they are not the atypical kids movie.
I would give Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service a try.

I respect that. Sometimes the Miyazaki movies can be a little intense for kids, but the messages are clear and wholesome. The main characters are usually strong, independent girls (I have 3 girls and a boy) and they often struggle with dealing with the environment and adult conflict around them. Perhaps the kids don't pick up on the subtle messages, but I find them uplifting and amazing to look at.

I genuinely don't like most anime (I think the Japanese culture doesn't translate particularly well into ours), but I've always loved Miyazaki movies.

Anyone ever like "The Last Starfighter"? I thought that one was pretty good.

As mentioned before, you can't go wrong with Little Giants or the Sandlot. I also have the highlights of Northwestern 1995-1996 Rosebowl season... who doesn't like to see that?!?
