I wonder if Bernstein were as outraged every time he heard it on the campus of Duke University from his fratboy friends as he is from a 66 yr old woman.

My guess: Probably not.

The uproar over saying the n-word almost three decades ago is pretty silly. What I do find disturbing is that she and a family member apparently saw nothing wrong with planning a plantation themed wedding with the black waitstaff assuming the role of slaves.

Be pissed about that.

Correct about that. Someone of my age or younger wouldn't think about that ever. I would guess some 65-85 year old southern woman could be romanticizing some gone with the wind crap without really thinking it through. Whatever anyway I am done caring about this actually.

I hear what you're saying Tadley, but even that doesn't upset me. I realized a long time ago that the south isn't very progressive and that there are a lot of people (surprisingly both black and white), who prefer things the way they were.

But the controversy is happening now so it is totally like the most import thing that has ever happened in the history of anything ever.

Political correctness is out of fucking hand. Is what she said wrong? Yes. Is she an ignorant cracker? Yes. Should something she said 27 years ago affect her today? No.

wasn't strom thurmond a blatent racist who kept his senate seat all the way up to his death? where was the media outcry for that.... oh wait twitter wasnt around yet... I kinda agree, it was a long time ago

Strom also wore a puke pad on his head which he mistakenly called a toupee.

I've never spent any time down there so I guess I don't realize how entrenched it is or how many things people might think are OK that would make someone from around here who is definitely not PC say "WTF?"

Reading that part of the column again she seems to think that the waitstaff (the slaves) look very professional and happy in their white outfits and doesn't see it as denigrating because they're not in shackles and tattered clothing.

Regardless of what anyone thinks there are sure to be at least a half dozen craps directed at her today.

Yep. All the usual suspects have their 3 page crap on Paula ready to go. "Do you think it's funny Dan, do you? I think it's pretty good. Right Dan?"

That's exactly it. With white supremacy, there was certainly a level of malice but there was also a layer of cognitive dissonance whereby the oppressors convinced themselves that the oppressed were actually happy with the state of oppression. It's a weird dynamic. Sort of a "I keep my slaves happy, so back off!" mentality.

Depending on the substance of this Ricketts story I may need to rethink my belief that JORR is off his rocker when he posits Bernstein hearts CUBS.

He hearts Theoandjed but is pretty contemptuous of the Cubs themselves, their fans, and the surrounding culture. What's the Ricketts story?

That's it. I'm buying a goat tonight and walking to Cincinnati for Jack Hanrahan and One Step. Who's coming with me?

Oh yeah, that story couldn't have been more cloying if it were Jason Bernstein setting up a tryout for the guy.

If they gave it I missed it. Damned work got in the way again. But it must involve one step, thanks rsgreg.

This show would be immeasurably improved if Bernstein stopped talking.
