What is your definition of natural law?

So if someone has no choice in determining their sexual preference, does that possibly mean that a pedophile has no choice either?

And if so, why is the law currently discriminating against them?

Then leash responds.

It's a moot point because pedophiles infringe on the rights of others (like the right to grow up without being molested by a pedophile). Gays don't.

Seems logical.

But Seacrest fires back.

Seacrest wrote:

Then we get a whole lot of hemming and hawing.

Let's clear some things up.

Pedophilia refers to any person over 16 years of age being sexually attracted to prepubescent children (under 13).

I'll safely assume that no one here thinks a child under 13 can give consent to having sex. Therefore leash was correct in declaring Seacrest's original point moot.

That is your definition of pedophilia. Like it or not, it is not shared by literally millions of others.

We are back to where we started. If you want to live in a morally relativistic society, you aren't going to be able to get agreement with others. It's a nice sentiment on your part and nothing else.
You chose the rules yourself that you wanted to make and live by. So everyone must get to also.

I believe in a natural law, the one put forth by the likes of Plato, Aristotle and Socrates. Before we knew about God, the author of the natural law.

A "morally absolutist" society would never find agreement in a Democracy, either, even if it were based on the single book that you love to subscribe to. It is all still based on individual interpretation, and there are areas not addressed. Stances that the Bible is right and there are no other thoughts or opinions are beyond arrogant. Most Christians I know don't even subscribe to these thoughts.

Not sure what citing natural law (which is, as a concept, highly disputed across different historical periods) and those earlier philosophers does for this argument, especially since Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates lived during a time and place in which pederasty was rampant. Also, if you subscribe to modern definitions of pedophilia, how can you cite premodern thinkers and concepts when the average age of marriage/intercourse worldwide was much lower than what we deem acceptable today? Even as far back as Charlemagne in the ninth century you have young girls being married off and bearing children at ages we'd consider morally unacceptable today.

Hey look. Another "I'm right because I'm catholic" thread that Seacrest had abandoned when shown how full of crap he is. Shocked face in 3...2...1...

BTW Seacrest. You can find pretty easily that Mary was probably 12-16 when she gave birth to Jesus. So does that mean Joseph was a pedophile?

It is legal in Utha. The feds went after the Mormons pretty hard after this. So when it goes through again, I do not wantto hear a peep out of any of you who defended gay marriage.

They may allow an old linebacker coach to grab their penis because they get to go to a football game and receive a brand new jacket. The child sees that as a good deal. He isn't "ruined" until society gets involved and tells him what happened was wrong. Then he begins to see himself as a victim or perhaps as a damaged person.

I don't know if I agree with the guy or not, but it's an interesting conversation, though probably not one that can be reasonably had in a forum such as this.

No, it's not interesting. The academic guy is a wacko and should be looked at.

I am going to give my opinion on this,I know you to almost a man think I am a total jackwad but this is how I look at it from a Christian point of view. Mind you I was brought up in an Irish Catholic background and was aiming to be a priest for a long time.

I am against gay marriage from a religion standpoint because the Bible says so but it is not my place to condemn and put upon those who wish to do so because once again the Bible says so. It says that it is only the Lord Gods' place to judge others. I have friends who are gay, my best friends daughter is transgender. Is it a sin according to Gods law as set down in the Bible? Yes it is quite clear on that as well as marriage being between a man and a woman. Yet it is also very very clear that as a mere man made in the Lords image that I am not fit to judge others . I am to pray for them that they may see the error of ways and come around to following Gods laws as well as I should. As a human being I am full of faults,as Jesus said how can I remove the splinter from my neighbors eye when I have a mote in mine.

Gods law is stupid and you should ignore it when it is stupid.

I don't know about that. I've never particularly embraced academia, but I am pretty sure that the concept of children as "innocents" is less than 200 years old and was created mainly as a political tool.
