From the Trib:
In a surprising move, the Bulls will not renew the contract of lead assistant coach Ron Adams.

Adams, in his second stint with the Bulls, came to Chicago following a successful run as Scott Brooks’ lead assistant in Oklahoma City. A longtime friend of Tom Thibodeau's, Adams left the Thunder to be closer to his family, who remained in the Chicago area for school reasons following Adams’ first stint with the Bulls under Scott Skiles.

According to sources, general manager Gar Forman made the decision, not Thibodeau. Forman informed Adams on Friday.

Adams could land back with the Thunder, who have an opening after Maurice Cheeks left to take the head coaching job with the Detroit Pistons. Adams, known for his strong work at developing players, also drew interest earlier this offseason from other unknown teams.

Adams had been working on one-year deals since leaving the Thunder.

In other coaching news, former Bulls and Celtics fan favorite Brian Scalabrine is close to finalizing a deal to join Mark Jackson’s staff in Golden State.

Why don't you let your coach pick his staff?

I wonder what it would actually take for Garpax to lose their jobs? And has Thibs signed his extension?

How many people do you think KC cleared that story with first?

The only thing I can say is that the choice was made a long time ago and they just dont let guys know what the new plans are until AFTER the draft.

See Doug Collins

I'm surprised KC didn't sit on this story until the new assistant was hired.

This.

KC Johnson isn't a true beat writer or even a "sports reporter" doing some investigative stuff trying to scoop the story and such....

He's a PR mouthpiece for the Bulls. PERIOD.FULL.STOP.

I used to think about this. Is Johnson deliberately bland because he's not a columnist and therefore should not venture beyond descriptive, fact-based writing, or is he really just a mouthpiece?

He's really just a mouthpiece. It is obvious by his constant licking of Thibs' asshole.

My impression is that the beat "reporters" are mostly friends with the teams they cover and they have certain quid pro quo arrangements where they agree to access and info if the beat reporter agrees to not write offensive stories. Other than Derrick Rose not playing there hasn't been much to report with this team in the last season.

Didn't Thibs want Scal on the coaching staff last year?

I think it's more likely that Ron Adams or one of his friends gave it to him.

Yes, but Scalabrine took a TV or radio job instead with the Celtics.

It seems weird that he's now going to work for Jackson.

There are very few "true" investigative reporters working outside of CNN and Fox News.

This has JR's cigar smoke all over it. Adams must have leaked something or somehow irritated the Chairman.

Hmmm. . . you think it is Forman that wants Thibs out?

I'd look a bit closer at the guy who refused to play for him this year.

Interesting.

So I just read David Haugh's take on the Adams dismissal, and he insinuates the same thing Bernstein did about Thibs possibly not being around for the long-term:

Quote:
What Forman's decision ultimately says about the direction the Bulls go bears watching closely, from the Berto to Boston. Forman's plan to realistically compete for an NBA championship again in 2014 remains sound if Luol Deng stays and the right pieces fit around a rehabilitated Rose. But some wonder whether Thibodeau will be around for the final phase.

Does anyone have any background information on the supposed feud between Forman and Thibs? Haugh cited Wojnarowski in suggesting that Forman and Thibs just don't get along:

Quote:
As much as Thibodeau downplayed waiting six months to finally sign his contract extension last April, you can find people in the organization who believe it was no accident. Respected NBA writer Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo tweeted Monday that Forman's and Thibodeau's relationship was "easily the worst in NBA" between a GM and coach.

I think Thibs is easily the more valuable asset to the organization. This is a guy who withstood GarPax's bungling of Asik's free agency, oversaw a massive makeover to the bench, endured the Rose saga, and still managed to finish within only four wins of the Pacers, the team of the supposed "we got next" variety. This is also the man that saved the Bulls from the VDN fiasco (also a GarPax-stamped mess). Absent some sort of stunning, behind-the-scenes revelation, there's no doubt in my mind that Thibs can guide a team to a championship. I know we're talking different scales here, but Forman has nowhere near the list of accomplishments that Thibs has, so how someone like him can possibly imagine a rosy Bulls future with Thibs gone and him still in charge is simply delusional. This may be a case where the subordinate is more qualified than the superior, and Forman will set the Bulls back five years or so if he wins his little battle and engineers Thibs' exit.

I bet thibs wished he didn't sign that extension. Boston would love to have him back.

Phil was great but in terms of actually coaching strategy, you're exactly right. I'd probably put Tex Winter ahead of Thibs though.
