Not entirely relevant to the discussion here, but I did want to kind of complicate a connection I see here and in other threads between Dan's education and his supposed commentary for the thinking fan. His background in English does not and should not give his views on racism, biology, heterosexual normativity, comparative theology, etc., any more weight than we would give a career street vendor's comments about rocket science and politics. Duke is a great school, but English majors don't simultaneously undergo any kind of rigorous and sustained training in the subjects he so forcefully and pedantically engages. I doubt his time in Rockford doing play by play exposed him to that kind of stuff as well. In other words, the views rightfully criticized here and in other threads are not the profoundly nuanced views of an educated man; they are simply the views of hyperbolic, sanctimonious, elitist asshole who happens to spit into a microphone.

By the way, just to be precise, Duke is technically not an ivy league school. This doesn't make it any less of a school, nor has anyone here mentioned Duke being an ivy league school, but I just wanted to point this out. It's not like the general perception of Bernstein's intellectualism needs to be any more inflated than it already is.

Good points. I always saw through this meme that Dan is any more intelligent than anyone else. I think he uses his Duke English degree and NY Times puzzles to have a proper way of speaking and a good vocabulary. Really what he must have done is simply take some advanced debate courses and really knows how to use those tools.

Does not make him correct though 8)

Are you really going to argue that he doesn't have well above average intelligence? It seems pretty obvious that the guy is smart but he also has the paper on the wall to back it up.

Vegan, I understand that the degree does not indicate expertise in other areas. However, it is apparent Dan has wide ranging intellectual interests that he pursues even beyond his formal education. Anyway, I assume he took classes other than English literature and Communications.

He does not have well above intelligence. He's stated he could not have gotten into Duke with today's standards. Shit, you have a few guys in the small sample of this stupid sports message board that run circles around the guy. That doesn't scream well above average to me...

He certainly does have wide-ranging intellectual interests in other areas besides English and sports, but I am critical of his presumption of certainty on topics in which he clearly has had no formal training or long periods of studying. I realize the medium is a radio station which broadcasts opinions and news, and it's probably the academic inside me that finds his performance so problematic. But again it's not that he has other interests outside his specialization, it's just irritating that he feels his superficial knowledge of complex topics is sufficient enough for him to issue what amount to authoritative proclamations on said topics. It's one thing to apply intellect to social and moral problems, but it's an entirely different thing to have knowledge. I think he confuses the two.

Dave in Champaign said it best - Bernstein knows a ton of stuff, but he is constitutionally incapable of critical thinking. He's a dumb person's idea of a smart person.

He is a few years older than me. I can verify that Duke was incredibly difficult to get into in those days. I think he is being modest. I would bet their selectivity was peaking during the early national title run days.

I'm really not going to argue the point. He seems bright to me. He has some academic credentials to support the opinion. He overreaches in his conclusions at times. We all do.

Did you get invited to Mellody Hobson's wedding?

a little older than me...but no. I'm sure I know some attendees. I'll see if I can get the scoop.

for all her personal success, she has a history of dating MUCH older, incredibly wealthy men. I guess I can see why. On the other hand, at the end of the day, you have to press up against some wrinkly, old fart. I'd do it for access to a billion dollar line of credit but definite daddy issues.

The Jesuits were already attached to her but this is real money now.

Star Wars VII will now feature a well spoken wolf like character as the hero.

In the last week an Ignatian has reffed an NBA championship game and married into the Star Wars fortune. How do you like that Rick?

The Emanuel administration got Zwecker on the case this morning to let us all know why we should be grateful that Promontory Point was closed to the taxpaying public on a prime summer Saturday.

Bernstein matriculated at Duke in 1987. Its selectivity in admissions greatly increased through the late 80s and 90s. Bernstein was admitted when Duke was still a safety school for people who couldn't get into the Ivies.
