Here's a hypothetical for you. The (pick one: MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA) has decided that each team must pay $200k into a pot. They will have a "lifetime fantasy" contest where your average Joe can sign up for free. As long as they can pass a physical, they are eligible to participate. Your prize should you win, an active position on the roster of your choice. This won't be just a glorified roster spot either, you would be required to participate in a total of at least 20% of the games, and at least 10% of minutes played for NBA and NHL, 10% of innings played for MLB, and 5% of downs played by the NFL team. You would play for the year at a salary of 200k* the number of teams in the league (around 5-6 mill) and you would get to pick the team you'd play for. You would have to make yourself available for more than usual media exposure, and you'd have to allow a documentary film crew to follow you. You would not earn any time towards any of the player pension plans, nor would you be considered a voting member of the player associations. You would be an unrestricted free agent after the end of the year, so if you impressed any teams, they'd be able to sign you at which point you would become like any other player in the association.

I'd probably do it and play baseball figuring that they can pinch hit me or put me in for fielding purposes in blowout games and I'd be able to hit the inning and appearance requirements. Even though my favorite team is the White Sox, not sure I would want to pick them because I'm going to suck even worse then their current players do and don't want to deal with the media/fan fallout. Maybe somewhere like Kansas City or Houston would be better... would have to consider that some more.

I would choose the Miami Heat and then pull a Danny Green and party with the Bulls after they beat us in the playoffs.

I would find the media/fan fallout funny if I sucked. Why the hell would they actually expect me to be any good?

I would give my left nut to play NFL football or hockey for a single game for real.

You'd think that, but after reading this board for the better part of a decade, I see that fan opinions aren't necessarily in line with reality all the time. :) Imagine if you screw up two NFL games and the team goes 9-7 missing the playoffs instead of 11-5... I guess you could try to laugh it off, but even your teammates are gonna be a little pissed at you, I'd imagine.

I also thought about this -- what if I join the Tigers or something and purposely tank the games when I could in an effort to help out the Sox? You'd want to do it where you were a bumbling idiot, and not make it obvious because life traveling with the team might be hell otherwise, but I'm thinking it wouldn't take much to convince the team that I was a bumbling idiot.
