Not surprised coming from that area. A few weeks ago i saw a botched robbery at the liquor store on austin and roosevelt where somehow the tables were turned on the robber and he got cracked a few times with a golf club during his escape out the door

Yeah that area is like the edge of the W. Side along with Oak Park and Cicero and Berwyn. The pizzeria is located on the Cicero side of Roosevelt. Literally across the street is the city of Chicago. I drive this way every day to work. Really sad.

Sorta on the same subject, but I just noticed that there's a Lou Malnati's in the hood around Ogden and Pulaski.

Dated a Mexican chick bartender who worked at a hole in the wall near 22nd and Austin. Made a drunken midnight walk up Austin to that place on a surprisingly pleasant and mild January night. Cabbed it back down to Cermak with the pizza tho. Border areas between kinda-alright and not-so-great are like storm-fronts running into a hot patch of air. Shit happens and folks aren't always as on alert as those deeper in the shit tend to be.

Tasty, thin-crust cut up into squares; cheap, too. Lotsa great mom and pop pizza joints on the SW side.

Wonder if they'll try to keep the place going or if it'll be too much.

Half-way decent Chinese spot up the road on the Oak Park side of Roosevelt a few blocks beyond Austin, 'Happiness', I think it's called.

Used to go to high school with the owner's kid. The kid was a really good guy from what I remember. Funny to read all the comments on news sites about how this was a mob hit just because its a guy from Sicily.

I apologize because I didn't read any other articles about it, but was there a quote saying the guy was a big gun fan and always wanted to carry one on him at all times and the only reason he didn't was because of Illinois state law?

Only criminals should be allowed to carry guns.

If I were a small business owner in a shitty area I would give 2 shits what the law said about conceal and carry and would have a gun on me at all times. Seems the criminals arent real concerned about illegally having the gun when they hold these places up so why would I . The adage about being judged by 12 than carried by 6 applies. No jury would convict this guy if he wouldve vented this piece of shit in the act of protecting his wife / business.

Exactly -- if he had a gun in the store, which is quite possible, then he wasn't able to get to it in time. I'm not sure concealed carry law has anything to do with this situation because by the time he found out he was in a situation, he was already in it. Maybe he was going for the gun, and that's why he got shot -- same thing would happen with concealed carry. None of us will know exactly what happened there, but I don't see any real evidence that concealed carry would have prevented this from happening.

It wouldve posssibly prevented / mitigated it in the sense if he already had the weapon on him like a cop. Story was that he observed this useless fuckbag enter the rear of the store. So if he has a gun on him, he draws it and goes to help his wife. Now obviously it doesnt mean that this wouldve ended any better for him or possibly worse and the wife gets shot as well but at least he wouldve had a fighting chance. Knife to a gunfight, no chance. Either way, Im a store owner, the law can go fuck itself. Id be packing

Drove by here today. The memorial blocking the front door is haunting. If one of you goes by soon take a pic and post it.

Debate guns all you want but had he followed the cardinal safety rule of the restaurant business -- keeping the back door locked -- especially after closing -- this likely would not have happened.

Why the fuck didn't you take a picture of it? You don't hesitate to take a picture of the crap you eat in rag tag greasy spoons all over the place.

They reopened this over the weekend. They still have the memorial at the front door as of this morning when I drove by it.

Bottom line: 10000 good peaceful days running your business does not equal one nightmare evening. All it takes is one nut with a gun.
They were rolling the dice running the business in that area. I guess now they are talking about improving security.I bet the old guy thought he didn't need it and the family let him have his way.
It's a real tragedy, just like the 5-20 tragedies that happen everyday in the big city. The guns need to be confiscated but the politicians just hem and haw until another huge mass shooting. What a joke!

That would be like banning cars to stop drunk driving.

Nobody gets a car, you walk to work you fuck!

No, it would be nothing like it. Banning cars would crush the economy. Banning guns would have no such impact.

But for some reason many people have a strong emotional connection with guns, almost a bizarre love. From a logical standpoint the only differences between guns and something like bowling balls is that people are not mesmerized by bowling balls and guns --- either misused or in the wrong hands -- kill innocent people.

OK, I do not see the need for assault weapons to be sold to the public. I feel a longer waiting period and a more complete investigation into the individuals who choose to buy a weapon would be nice.

Well that's better. Much better. I guess I'd be on board with that. but beyond criminal background checks, what else can you investigate? That doesn't take more than a few days.

Probably not much longer than it takes to get a photo id to vote? Sorry couldn't resist.

I don't know, but maybe a list of references? It sounds funny, but having 4 or 5 people vouching for a guys responsibility with a weapon might not hurt.
